Can someone point me to an install guide to add the HD transmission cooler to the "tow prep" package? I've tried searching without any luck.

If there is already a factory cooler there, upgrading to the larger tow package cooler is very easy. Remove the grill, use pliers to loosen the spring clamps on the hoses, remove the old cooler, insert the new cooler, replace the hoses and grill.

I don't think I have a factory cooler. All I can see down there is the radiator and what I'm assuming is the intercooler. the oil cooler is just mounted in front of and to the radiator right?

Hmmmm. On my 2014EL & my 2003XLT (with tow package) there is a second "cooler" ... if "cooler" means radiator. It's not just a bigger radiator. The second (small) radiator is in front of the main radiator. The tranny fluid runs into main radiator, then into second radiator then back to tranny. If I have that correct. It may be the reverse flow. Is this what you are inquiring about?

Yes, the cooler does resemble a small radiator. I'm not sure where the fluid runs first, the radiator or the cooler. I'd like the cooler to be the last thing it runs through as that would be more effective.

According to the Ford towing guide my 2007's (5.4V8) auxiliary automatic transmission oil cooler is 7-channel standard; 11-channel with 536 option package. I had the 536 option (HD tow). Easy to replace the small cooler with the big one and a common upgrade on some towing forums.

No such notation regarding a bigger cooler for my 2017 (3.5 EcoBoost) HD Tow, just that an auxiliary automatic transmission oil cooler is fitted. Would appear adding this would be more complex as there's not one to begin with.

Chuck I do believe you will have the bigger cooler on your HD tow EcoBoost. The HD trans cooler part # comes up for 2007-2009 5.4 V8 and 2015-2017 Expeditions with HD tow. For some reason Ford only used the bigger transmission cooler for the first 3 years and last 3 years of the 3rd generation trucks. And the kicker is there was no changes made to it.....literally just says it’s for 07-09, skips 10-14, then says it is for 15-17 as well...weird. A search for those in between years only yields results for the small 5 row cooler.

I only have experience with those two model years and the HD Tow transmission coolers looked to be the same on both (the 2007 is no longer here).

Fitting the larger transmission cooler seems to very simple IF the smaller aux cooler is already there, at least from reports on some of the camper towing forums. Either new or recycled parts pretty much just bolt on (from recollection). Same with the larger engine radiator furnished for all model years with HD Tow.

For lurkers considering a Expedition always get the HD tow option no matter your intention to tow or not. It was a $300 factory option in the early models and just the HD cooling is worth that. Later HD Tow packages also include the very competent trailer brake and anti-sway systems.

I was pretty much forced to upgrade the cooler. I bought my 07 to relieve my 00 Explorer of towing duties. The 07 came with the HD towing package. When I found a minor leak in the transmission cooler, I also found that it had been replaced earlier with a smaller (cheaper) standard cooler. I replaced it with a larger, HD cooler which was incredibly easy as I stated earlier.

thanks everyone for the input and wealth of knowledge. so from what I gather, the 15-17 ecos without the HD package have a transmission oil cooler built into the radiator, does that sound right? and the HD package has both the integrated radiator cooler plus an additional 5 or 7 row cooler attached to the front of the radiator? the trans oil path I'm assuming goes trans->rad->cooler->trans.

What I'm trying to do is add the cooler attached to the front of the radiator. I ordered the parts I think are needed (7L1Z-7A095-B, FL1Z-7C410-A, BL3Z-7B028-A), and it looks like I have the right brackets/mounts for it sitting on the front of my radiator.

also Chuck I agree with you. anyone looking for an expedition, save yourself the trouble and just find one with the HD tow package and you don't have to go through the headache of adding everything yourself.

EDIT**
If anyone has any pictures of what the cooler looks like on the Expy's with the HD package, I'd really appreciate it!
