I have a slight rattle coming from the driver side turbo on cold starts. I’m thinking it is the waste-gate flapper valve in the exhaust pipe flapping like the guy says in the video in the link. Think I should live with it or use the warranty?

I’ll post a video of my Expedition doing it and add the link here.

Changed the oil 3 days ago with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum full synthetic 5W-30 (6 qrts) with a MotorCraft FL-500s oil fliter. Expy has 31,800 miles on it. Also has an aluminum oil pan with a normal steel bolt drain-pin.

Warranty that while you can. Show both videos and shouldn’t be a problem

Take it in for a new turbo, That is the same noise my wategate was making,
if they put up a fight, Have them unplug the wastgate electrial connector and rev it up. the noise will dissapear. plug the electrical connector back into the wastegate and the noise will be back. proving that the wastegate is ratteling

here is how my truck sounded

Oh wow, I was just watching my video, do u see anything wrong here?

Looks like there is a bushing missing.

i just check the parts diagram. that is the correct set up.
This seems like a bad design. one would thing, when the bushing start to wear out and there is some play in the swaybar link, the nut is going to rattel badley on the swaybar. I never seen a set up like this before. seems like a realy bad design.

Ya I hear you there.
if you do get a new turbo, check your fluids before you take it in for repair. Then check oil and antifreeze before you pick it up. My truck was 1.5 quarts low on oil after the turbo change, the dealer never filled the oil back up that leaked out.

^Video of my Expy during a cold start.
Mine did the same. They replaced the VCT solenoids & catalytics and the noise was still there. They finally gave in and replaced the turbo a few days ago. they even stated the noise was "normal". I questioned them on if its normal then why the VCT and cat's? they have had the vehicle 11 weeks now.

I started the truck with the technician and service manager in the service bay.

I reved up truck, the tech heard the rattel.

I had him unplug the electrical connector to the wastegate. And rattel was gone. The tech was shocked, a turbo with such low miles was bad.

Before that I was explaing the issue to the service manager, They were trying to tell me that is normal.

So thats went we all took a walk to the truck. I had to show them the rattel. And how to stop the rattel by unplugging the electrical connector.
