I’m trying to install a transmission oil cooler on my 2017 but cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the grille off. From what I’ve seen the grille and front bumper are all part of a single assembly they comes off together.
I’ve removed the plastic cover and 4 torx screws underneath that but at am at a loss in what to do next.
Can’t find any videos or tutorials anywhere. I know several of you have done this and would love to know how it’s done without breaking anymore clips. [emoji849]
Thanks in advance!

Thanks all! Unfortunately I had already found both of those videos, neither of which helped very much.
I grabbed a PDF as suggested and that helped point out 4 elusive bolts that were holding the whole thing on.
Got it now, and tranny cooler installed!
Thanks!

Where were these four bolts... I am also stuck with the grille being on and do not wish to take off the entire front bumper?

I already purchased two manuals online in attempt to figure this out, but the diagrams/instructions seem to skip right over this part or simply state to remove the entire bumper.

help needed!

I know this post is old but can anyone tell my why the front bumper on this 17 expy I want to buy looks like the one on my 07? I thought they changed it and the pics I've found online show they did but not why this one looks different.

Logan, that looks like the front end of an SSV model of Expedition, also known as the police package. These usually, but not always, also have certain features like rubber flooring, and a column mounted shifter. I have a 2016 SSV with the same front end.BC3B9C21-7D28-42AA-8F9B-37C73E2DECD3.jpeg

Good to hear. I was worried it might have been in an accident and someone replaced it with that. You have a good looking expy by the way. What color red is that?

It’s called Bronze Fire metallic. Depends on the lighting but sometimes it looks red, sometimes maroon, sometimes brown. This car belonged to the Florida Highway Patrol and as a southern car it was rust free. But the paint was hazy and swirled from being run through tons of automatic car washes. Im glad that after a lot of sweat and several hours on the buffer the paint shined up nicely.

Does yours have the 6cyl or 8? The one I'm looking at has the 6cyl turbo and I don't know how good they are. I would be replacing my 07 expy with this 17 only because mine needs about $8000 worth of repairs to the engine. Figured it was time to get a newer one.

The ‘15 ‘16 and ‘17’s have the older body style, but the 6cyl turbo. We also have a ‘08 Expedition EL in the family. In comparison I do like the turbo engine. It’s faster and more responsive than our truck with the V8. As far as reliability… our 2008 we got new and now has 240k. It’s definitely showing its age and has had some repairs over the years, But still ticking. The 2016 was purchased used with 180k on the odometer. I think the key is good maintenance during the life of the vehicle. Sometimes that’s hard to judge when buying used.
When I found the used 2016 Expedition SSV (police package) I was really looking for a small car for my college kid. But this one was at a local used car dealer, and it caught my eye. The price was right, and when I test drove it, I was impressed. I ended up getting it for myself.
I knew that the Florida highway patrol took care of their vehicles very well, and despite the high mileage, I was guessing everything was always repaired and taken care of for the life of the truck.
Also, the highway patrol doesn’t use a central government repair shop, since their vehicles are spread out all across the state. They use local dealerships and shops to maintain their fleet. I was able to do a Carfax report on the Vin before I purchased this truck and it showed it had been maintained almost exclusively at a Ford dealership here in Florida. Carfax helped me verify that the service was always kept up with. I think that will be the key for you, especially if looking at any used fleet vehicle. Try to determine as best as you can the quality of the care the vehicle may have had.
Otherwise, I really like the SSV version of this truck. I like the column shifter, and I also really like the rubber floor and vinyl bench seat in the rear. I ride around with a big dog a lot of times, and the rubber floor and vinyl seat in back make it easy to keep clean. This particular police car must’ve been an administrators vehicle because the interior is very lightly used. It’s not full of holes from mounting of a police cage or police lights. So even though it had high miles as a highway patrol car it appears to be lightly used.
I can also tell you that some police cars are not well-maintained. Some of the equipment mounted inside can create quite a mess when removed, and sometimes the cars are beat on. Don’t be afraid to have your own mechanic give the car a once over before buying anything.

Always bought police vehicles and they saved me a ton of money over the years. Looking for a 4th Generation now. Lots of departments are mandated to get rid of them at two years or 60,000 miles, so the search is on. Unfortunately the days of giving them away really cheap are over, so your risks are higher.

What do you think of the 3.5 ecoboosts? My 07 needs about $8000 in engine repairs and I'm just gonna replace it. Found a 17 with 150,000 miles but I know nothing about the 3.5 ecoboost.

There are obviously millions of trouble-free Eco-Boosts out there so I believe they aren't problematic, unless, of course you have one with a problem.

I never owned one, so my opinion doesn't mean much.

Fair enough, no one else seems to want to say anything about how good or bad those engines are so I figured I'd ask you.

If you go to the top right of this page there is a search box. Put "3.5 ecoboost" in the search box and put "lokiwolf" in the members box.
You can learn everything about the ecoboost. The ones you are looking at are 1 gen ecoboost W/6 speed trans, 2018 and newer are 2 gen ecoboost W/10 speed trans, learn all this and way more.

The fact that you are only searching posts by @LokiWolf means you will only be reading correct information.

If you have any questions about a engine after that start a thread in the Engine and preformance. You will get answers about engines there.
