Yes, remove the shutters, but why? It helps the motor warm up under cool temps and increases the MPG on the highway. If you get a tune, your tuner will adjust to increase airflow under certain conditions.
Here in AZ no need for shutters. I need as much airflow and cooling as possible.

I can’t just pull a plug?

No because the shutters would still be there. If you are going to do that, it is no advantage. It will open when it is hot. Yours is probably hardly ever closed. If you really want the most airflow, physically remove the shutters. Even in the open position, they do have a small footprint. Leave the motor, and remove the actual shutters, and the computer will never know the difference.

When did this become an option? I’ve never heard of them having these.

Are these visible from the front of the vehicle? I’m curious to know what they look like.

They’re not easily visible from the front. If you get right up close, you may be able to see the shutters. I’ll need to double check but there should be shutters for the main opening and another set for the lower inter-cooler opening.

Use a flashlight you’ll see them. The whole front end has window shutters

I Searched google real quick and it seems the expedition uses the F150 shutters. I remember my F150 had the top and bottom grill shutters. I had to pull the bottom one completely out to fit my AVF intercooler as it was two times thicker than the stock unit. It’s not too difficult to remove the bottom one, a few bolts and disconnecting the plug and it’s out. It never threw a code with the lower shutters removed.

downside is if they fail.

mine failed during a 5HR vacation drive with family in a fully loaded explorer in the middle of summer. the coolant went to the red, and I had to really limp on the expressway until i got home.

if you're in a very warm environment, I could see just removing them completely as there's just a risk of them faulting.

It was the actuator itself, so the system didn't error out to open.

This is the reason I’m looking to delete this crap! I’m old school and too many moving parts scare me. Don’t want to get caught with my pants down haha

AGS Failure is RARE, as in VERY! I am on MANY Ford forums and groups, as you can tell with my signature, owned many different ones through the years. I can count the number of times I have heard about it on 1 hand. Anerbe's is the only one I have heard of failing in the closed position. The default position is open. So unique circumstances for it to both fail, and fail closed. Also 1 I can remember was because of something coming through the grill and damaging the activator, that was discovered during replacement.

You can imagine my surprise of the failure and failure on close on top.

I personally wouldn't deactivate it, as you benefit from aero and faster warmup.

What i find on the forums is that the domestic/asian forums are a much smaller % of the overall registered owners, vs. the europeans, especially the performance cars. Rare could be true, but I'm not sure the issue overall is an anomoly. the dealer was able to replace the actuator on site, and didn't give an indication that it was a rarity, quite the opposite.

hate to say, but the dealer was also not surprised when my torque converter took a crap in the explorer last year, requiring my car to be in service for 1 month while the part was in backorder. unfortunate fellow who brought in the same year explorer at the same time but with 15K more miles, and ford wouldn't cover his torque converter taking a crap.

man was he pissed when he saw me drive away in a loaner.

Anyone know where the actuator for the upper radiator shutters is located?

No, sorry. Haven't had the grill of our 2020 off to take a look. It will be pretty obvious when you have the grill off. Again, unless you are having issues, or installing an aftermarket Intercooler where it needs the AGS removed, I would leave it alone.

It can be. Not sure if I have seen the specific coding for the Expedition. Can be turned off in tuning also.
I have a tune and this is what 5 star told me. See pic..
