My Expy is in the shop for a wheel bearing and another set of cam phasers (sigh).

The turbos have been super rattly since the first set of phasers I had replaced and I told them back then and they ignored it and I was in a hurry and didn't feel like dealing with them. Now closer to the end of my warranty I want the turbo rattle fixed.

I was wondering who has success with the dealership getting this issue resolved? Is there something I can tell them to make them listen? Do I need to go over the dealers head? I just think an 80k vehicle should not sound like $h!t. Any advice would be appreciated.

Are you sure it’s turbo rattle and not the more common wastegate rattle? Hundreds of 2nd gen 3.5s are plagued by wastegate rattle tht dealerships fix

Well, I suppose you could say I had success.

I took it in for wastegate rattle about a 18 months ago.
I had the TSB in hand for the F150 wastegate rattle (same turbo)
I had a video recording of my engine making the noise.

The service ”advisor” said she wasn’t familiar with the problem.
Ya don’t say…
I asked to speak directly to the engine tech, and I showed him the video. He knew immediately what my concern was and knew of the TSB being performed on F150’s.

They had my Expy for about an hour, and then called me to say they were ordering two new turbos.

Success right? Both turbos were replaced, (also had the cam phaser job done) and when i got it back from them, the sound at cold start was a thing of beauty—no ticks, no rattles, just a nice smooth exhaust note and a little turbo whistle—exactly how it should be.

Within 2 months the turbos were rattling again like a heat shield on a Pinto exhaust.
And 15 months later, my cam phaser knocking was back.

It’s just a poorly designed wastegate. Cheap materials and loose tolerances. A new POS part, is still a POS part.
Ford won’t do anything about it unless/until the part has degraded to the point of impacting engine performance—and good luck proving that.

Yep, I was crestfallen.
And then when the cam phaser knock came back, I just gave up.
If it were a $30,000 vehicle I would still be irritated, but a sticker of $82,000 ?…

Every time I get in and start it up, I am cringing at the sounds. Totally sucked the joy out of owning this awesome machine.
Ford should be ashamed.

Ford doesn't care! They don't care about the waste gate, they don't care about the cam phasers, they flat out don't care about you. They have your money. Have a Ford day!

Unless things have changed with the 2021, 2022's, I laugh at all these guys buying new ones. Guess they don't read these threads, or hope theirs will be better. I just SMH.....no offense.

I told my dealer about the rattle, they looked at it listened to it and asked if they could keep it a couple days while the turbo was shipped to them. A few days later I picked it up with a new turbo. Its quiet now. I'm only at 37,000 miles and my cm phasers have yet to ever rattle and mines an 18.

I took mine 2018 in for the wastegate rattle and they replaced both turbos. The writeup said there was too much play in the impeller or something along those lines, but I wonder if that was just the tech's way of getting them replaced.

1000% this!

I’m 56k in and in the same boat. We almost bought an Aviator for my wife, thankfully the cam phaser failure put that on hold. Now, the on going 4x4 and passenger seat issues have put us off Ford completely.

What's the other option? Buy a GM V8 and have the lifters take a shit on you and leave you stranded?

I don't think there's a clear and convincing better option for 1/2 ton based full size SUVs at the moment.

Nope, you gotta just get what you get and keep fingers crossed it’s smooth sailing with whatever vehicle you buy. Every vehicle has its issues, no matter what make or model. We aren’t the only ones dealing with replicated issues such as these.

This is the case now, unfortunately it hasn’t always been the case. Granted, vehicles are more complicated now than in the past but a big reason for this are things like CAFE standards a number of other feel good regulations… AKA government.

I’ve had many vehicles over the years and I could combine all of their issues and still not surpass the sh*t show situation I’ve experienced with my Navigator. I drove a 1989 Mazda 929s that was a hand me down from my dad. It had every bell and whistle, including oscillating air conditioning vents. I drove that thing hard, up and down forest service roads, long road trips, I took it to college and loaded it up with friends for donuts in parking lots… I can’t even go in to all the details for fear of arrest today. Long story short, when we finally donated the car in 2003 for tax purposes it had well over 300k miles and every single electronic option worked, even the oscillating vents, and the vehicle ran fine except that the ignition tumbler had worn out so bad you didn’t need a key to start it with. No tears in the leather, no history of massive repairs… regular maintenance only and a radiator, alternator, and starter replacement. There is absolutely zero chance any of our 4th gen Navigators or Expeditions will live anything near a fulfilling life of service for us and I find that both disappointing and infuriating.

Unfortunately, I don't know what the "other" option is. I know for me, it isn't Ford or Lincoln. I agree about GM. So what's left in close to full size? Infiniti QX80? Beautiful interior, but it looks 10 years old. New Sequoia? Not now with their possible turbo issues in the Tundra. New Lexus LX600. Love it, but $100K and same engine as the Sequoia, so possible turbo problems? Lexus GX470? Due for make over in 2024. Again, old, old, old. Slow, but a fairly bullet proof V8. Nissan? See Infiniti above. Genesis GV80? Beautiful interior, it'll last forever, but not "tough" enough for what most guys are doing as far as towing and room. What did I leave out?

Maybe the Expy is still a good choice, but not for those of us who are having multiple issues (and some with the same issue multiple times) and a manufacturer who doesn't care. I'll keep mine another year or two, unless it becomes a real POS, then it's gone.

Oh, and as Artie said, ask my wife about her 7 year old RAV4 with 80k+ miles. Other than maintenance, NOTHING!! My neighbors 4Runner. Can't kill it. My brothers '05 suburban with over 160k, nothing. A lot of it is luck of the draw, but when the dealer network doesn't help and the manufacturer doesn't care, it's a tough case for ME to go back. Again, SMH.

I hear you. I am hoping i get lucky and get at least average or above average product. My QX56/80 is at 154xxxmiles. rear suspension mostly replaced less than 10 K miles ago. Everything else has been bulletproof for close o 10yrs. may have considered the old INfiniti/nissan engine once more despite horrible gas mileage but the third row is tight despite it's size. In 10yrs, infants and kids have grown into big teens each needing space hence my need for a spacious 3 row. Other than GM, no one has a really low 3rd row floor which seats 3 - mercedes GLS does but seats two. I need an 8 people carrier not 7 with cargo room out back - hence Max. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope for a good one

This right here, folks.
Preach on brother.

My first car was a Datsun B210. In the 35 years since that car, I have owned a LOT of vehicles! I am a car guy—a motorhead—shade tree mechanic—you get the picture. I love cars, and I love tinkering.

As Artie said, this one ALONE..has had WAY more problems than all the others combined. And it isn’t even close. It’s a g0d-d@mned Greek tragedy.

Ford should be embarassed, and just buy the d@mned thing back for every penny that I have in it.

I will not buy another Ford product made in the last 20 years, and I will not step foot on another Ford dealership after this is over.

As far as other options, you are only painted into a corner if you allow yourself to be. I don‘t need a vehicle with all the tree-hugging, h@ppy horsesh!t CAFE “improvements”.
My plan is to buy an old diesel Excursion or 2500 Suburban. And resto-mod it. Modern infotainment. New interior. Rebuilt-as new drivetrain and upgraded suspension.
In the meantime, I’m going to buy an old LX470 as my daily driver while I build the resto-mod. (Actually going to look at an LX today)
In the end, I will spend about the same amount of money. But I will have something I actually enjoy, and will provide years of trouble-free service.
As a bonus, insurance and taxes will be much cheaper.

I started off driving an 88 f150 straight 6. That thing was bullet proof. 250k miles when I sold it. Think I replaced a timing gear once and maybe one thing in transmission, nothing major. Loved that truck. I also owned 3 separate mustangs and they all made it to 150k+ with zero issues. I might have had the pinion seal replaced in the 05.

Then I have had a BMW with zero issues. The only car I had with more issues than the Expy was a 2016 Acura MDX. I wanted to drive that turd into the lake. I will never buy japanese again.

I hope the Expy gets fixed and my issues don't come back because I love the vehicle.
