They are talking about the underlying SYNC operating system, not Android Auto. A lot of IoT devices use Android OS, but can still connect to Apple devices for control and management.

It cannot. Carplay can occupy the entire Application Area, and you can shrink the Card Area to maximize the size of the Application Area, but does not go full screen.

This is a unique solution I imagine, and my wife thinks I'm nuts, but I forced myself through a learning curve to tap the screen with my knuckle rather than my fingertip. Your knuckle doesn't carry the same oils that your fingertips do. I haven't cleaned my screen in months and now have more dust than fingerprint smudges. YMMV.
