Need 2nd cam replacement after 27k on them (91k on vehicle). Ford won’t cover. Cost is $2910. Normally I shop around I use 3 shops (one fully independent, one large National chain, and Ford service.) Would you trust someone other than Ford to replace them?

Consult with a Lawyer about this. Ford should be paying for all and future phaser repairs due to their parts designs etc

That really depends on the shop. I'd rather have it done by someone who knows cam phaser replacement inside and out, and due to the number of failures on these, Ford technicians are way beyond expert at this, which is sad. That said, I'd trust my local mechanic to do it, but would prefer Ford to pay for it and do it.

It’s really not that difficult of a job. Forum postings about it make it seem like brain surgery but it’s really not that bad. Any reputable auto shop can do the job. Most reputable mechanics are taking timing covers off weekly if not daily for various jobs. The trucks with the gen 2 ecoboost are relatively easy to work on compared to GM 2.4/3.6 timing jobs, which every local shop in my area can do blindfolded. I did the cam phasers in about 8 hours on my Expedition in my garage taking my time and drinking beer along the way. I used to be a mechanic and still work on cars on the side, but it’s doable by many people.

The OP is talking about a gen 4 expedition, which has the 2nd generation 3.5 ecoboost. Different from fordtechmakuloco's video. The teardown is very similar but many differences with the timing chains. There are no revised oil pumps for gen 2 ecoboosts yet to my knowledge either, unlike the gen 1.
