Sun roof rattle, yes again

Hello, I know, I know, this subject has been discussed previously. I have a 2022 XLT that just turned one year in my hands, since day one there has been an on and off rattle coming from the sunroof; this is my wifes daily driver so you can figure that if this noise is annoying for me and I only drive this car sometimes in weekends, to her, it is a headache trigger. It has been three times in the dealership and surprisingly, the noise hasn´t appeared while they have the car, they have even "adjusted and lubed" the complete sunroof assembly. In different places of the internet (forums, youtube, etc) I have seen very very different probable causes and potential solutions, and so far, the quietest I could get it was by applying vaseline to the complete edge where the front glass contacts both, roof and rear glass when closed, this gave us about two hours of quiteness but as soon as the vaseline started to dry down, the rattle came back with a vengeance desire. After that I tried with sprayable lithium grease, no good, then with dry lube, worse.

Not that I like to tell my story, but maybe to soften your helping hearts; my wife had a Toyota Prado that was in perfect state when I was diagnosed with lymphoma and she took me, forh and back, in less than six months, between appointments, tests, surgeries and finally chemotherapy, about 50 times to a city 200 miles away in a very crappy road, so, her car deteriorated logically and this rattly sun roof Expy is what I decided to get her instead.

Any help or advise will be greatly appretiated.

hmm interesting.. we were having some kind of rattle that my wife was saying was the passanger ceiling handle... mabye ours is in the sunroof too!?! have you tested with the interior cover both open and closed? I'll check that out next time I'm driving... for us the rattle only happens around 45-55 mph on a specific road that's a little bumpy.

That handle rattles as well, not as loud as the sunroof but also rattles, I took out the covers and tightened the screws, it got better but still rattles sometimes.

That handle rattles as well, not as loud as the sunroof but also rattles, I took out the covers and tightened the screws, it got better but still rattles sometimes.

Ford issued a TSB for a sunroof rattle (and other issues) on the 2018 - 2021 Ford Expedition: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2021/MC-10201618-0001.pdf

Although it doesn’t list the 2022 Expedition, you may want to review this TSB to see if it might help you determine the rattle cause?

What the hell is up with Ford and the various rattles? From Cam phaser rattle to turbo wastegate rattle to sunroof rattle & A-pillar rattle etc. This is ridiculous.

Don't worry, please. My 2024 Expedition Max XLT even rattles without a sunroof. So far, I still do not figure out where the rattling sound comes from. All I know is the sound comes from interior.

I have a dodger charger ratting when roads go rough. Eventually I figured the sound comes from the roof light cover above driver's head. Push it on and off twice, ratting sound is gone, for now at least.

Our handle rattles too. Haven’t had a chance to look at it yet. It’s definitely the handle in ours.

If you had success with Vaseline that wore away quickly,,but know the spot, I would add an adhesive backed pad to the area and see if it keeps the area taut.

When I did post production work on brand new Camrys, we had a felt like pad that had adhesive on it we called mole skin. I don’t know the real name for it, I believe it was a 3m product. We used it to hold wires added for things like security systems, auto dimming mirrors, etc. it was thin, not an eighth inch thick. Maybe a heavy sixteenth thick. It was like a 1.5x2.5 piece.

I’ve heard in my old car resto forums about guys using Velcro to stop rattles from dashes and such. I’ve never done that. Seems logical that might adhere to a spot and keep it from moving.

I had used velcro in my Corvette in the rear where the roof would be stowed to keep it from squeaking. It worked.

I would follow the TSB for the roof. The grease specified is very tacky and lasts a very long time- much longer than vasoline (which can also degrade seals since it is petroleum based). My wife's roof hasn't made a peep since i cleaned and greased it two years ago following the TSB. I also replaced broken sliding glass panel brackets per Ford's TSB when I lubed the sunroof.

Finally took mine into the dealership, they fiddled with the sun roof and ended up putting grease (Krytox I think). It fixed the popping noises out not the rattling. Today I found that the plastic trim that spans the seal between the sun roof and the rear fixed pane is the main culprit. Going to try and thicken the foam gasket to keep more pressure on the trim.

We could probably start a rattle bingo.

Latest update, the Expy has been in the dealership for 18 days now, they have dissasembled and reassembled the panoramic roof a number of times, just to give it a street test and have the rattle come right back. I am not happy about this, the car has been driven under 20ak miles and most of this time we have had to deal with an annoying rattle that emanates from within inches of the driver's ear. I am in the process of buying a new car for me, the Expy is my wives, and I was looking forward to another expy, a 2023 limited that has dropped in price at the dealership, or an Explorer, but this ridiculousness has me thinking about the new Traverse.

I don't use the sunroof. No rattle at the moment. Pulled the fuse so no one opens it, hoping never to create a rattle. In the past have had 2 explorers and 3 mountaineers , all with sunroofs ....never opened any of them.

This. Use the very expensive special grease in the TSB. It works. It fixed ours the first time and the fix has lasted almost a year and still no issues, despite rain and several trips thru the tunnel car wash.
