Is it totaled?

This is my 2024 XLT expedition max. I was hit pretty hard. It is currently at the body shop. Just wondering if you think it will be totaled. All the side airbags deployed, the running board is pointing up and down instead of horizontal, the doors don’t align on the side that was hit, that hole in the picture goes all the way to the door sill. All the headliners are blown out, also driver seat belt mechanism is completely shot.

OUCH, what a bummer ! Glad you're OK :)

Given the costs of repairs nowadays, your insurance company may total it out...especially if the frame itself was damaged in any way, since once that happens, even with the absolute best repair job, it will NEVER, EVA drive right afterwards :(

The door & the running board might be fixable for $4-5k, but the rest of it will add up very quickly and could easily top $10k in an instant, since the shop will probably find additional damage once they get things taken apart...

My friend recently had his front lower front bumper wrap, headlight assy, and some sensors replaced on his '12 EL, from an encounter with a guard rail on the highway....

total cost: $4867. Fortunately he had full coverage insurance, and all he had to pay was his $500 deductible :D

First off I hope everyone is o.k. After the accident.

Here, they would fix it. It’s a 24, so almost new, low mileage, no rust. A no brainer. Even so the B pillar is damaged and the airbags deployed, seatbelt no problem. Piece of cake. Takes a month and that thing is rollin once more.

Thank you! I am fine. The Expedition did exactly what it was supposed to do.

Glad to hear everyone is OK. Hopefully only soreness is the worst of it.

Everything depends on what is found.

Age and mileage will be the first determination due to establish a value baseline. The doors obviously are to be replaced. Then it depends on how much the door frame opening is damaged and can be pulled back into shape which it should. It will also will depend on the frame of the car if that stayed intact as well.

I will bet they will attempt to repair unless other catastrophic damage is found.

Seems totally fixable to me. I would not consider the running board being tweaked an indicator of frame damage. Those mounts are not the most robust and will easily bend in an accident. Doors aside body damage appears minimal looking at the gap where the a-pillar, hood, and fender meet.

Yes, but the way body shops are nowadays, with nobody wanting to do any "REAL" work, I would not be surprised if they came up with a whole list of "unseen additional damage" just to get it totaled out to avoid having to do the work....

When I commented earlier, I failed to take into account the Airbag deployment, which is VERY expensive to get repaired/replaced/reset, so that will most likely push the total upwards towards $15-20k, which is alot even for a '24, at which point the insurance company will probably take the easy way out also...

My friend with the bumper repair said the techs told him that his '12 would definitely have been totaled out if the airbags had deployed, so I guess he lucked out on that part, as it is otherwise in pristine condition and he really, really loves it & wants to "drive it till it dies" :D

Glad everyone is OK.

I'm not a body shop manager or insurance appraiser. What I see in your photos is the B pillar and probably the rocker box (below the doors) are bent. The B pillar and rocker box can be cut out and replaced. The roof and floor may be buckled, but they can be pulled out. The doors are an easy replacement. Since it's a 2024, the insurance appraiser may decide that it's fixable...or maybe not. But, if the frame is bent, my guess is it'll be totaled.

If im you, id push them to have it totaled. It has lost all its value (even after being "fixed") The carfax will show a accident, so if you keep it and try to trade it in in the furure, you will not get much for what It could have been worth with no accidents. The thing will probably have underlying, sensor, electrical, issues in the future due to the crash. If this accident was not your fault id be pushing for a total loss plus more. I dont knowbthe specifics but that me if I wasnt at fault. If its totalled, you should get the ACV (Market retail value) of the vehicle (before it was hit)

I’m hoping they total it. The other driver was 100% at fault. He told the trooper that he blacked out. Yes, I am concerned about the safety now, potential problems and loss of value if they try to fix it.

Good luck

“I blacked out” is a common phrase used by people that are deceitful and do not want to take responsibility for their actions.

Yes, assuming that the insurance company is worth a sh*t, they will/should give you market value aka ACV, and given that it is a low-mileage '24, that should give you almost enough to pay about 85% towards a new(ish) replacement vehicle.....

Hell, when my low-mileage '12 Caddy CTS & '11 Acadia were totaled out due to hail damage (otherwise pristine condition), we got back almost as much as we paid for them, 1.5 yrs earlier, which of course we put down on their replacements :D

So far the body is estimating $23000 in damages, still waiting on a few prices for parts. Estimated time frame if they fix it is 10 weeks.
