We are starting to look into newer Expedition, 2
We have a 2014 limited and it’s been bullet proof so far @ 165k miles.
What all issues and models to stay away from.

The 2023 and 2024 model years are part of the 4th generation Expedition. The two major complaints against 4th gen Expeditions are the transmission shifting issues caused by the CDF drum and cam phasers. Supposedly, Ford made parts updates somewhere in the 2022 model year and both issues were "fixed". https://www.expeditionforum.com/forums/4th-gen-ford-expedition-2018-to-2024.110/

The 2025 model year is part of the 5th generation of Expeditions. They are still too new to have a pattern of failures. However, they use the same engine and transmission as the 4th gen. https://www.expeditionforum.com/forums/5th-gen-ford-expedition-2025-to-present.120/

Ford issued the highest number of vehicle safety recalls and had the highest number of vehicles recalled in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

In 2025 - Ford has issued at least 140 vehicle safety recalls involving more than nine million vehicles - and is still in first place.

You’re taking a gamble if you buy a newer Expedition.

If it has been "bullet proof" I would advise keeping it. I've been fortunate as our 2024 has been pretty much problem free. Reading this forum the problems have been constant and unacceptable imo. Also getting parts to fix this things can be problematic. But if your fairly lucky they are a hell of a ride.

I traded my 2017 for a new 2024 model (bought in 2025) and I am very pleased with it. My biggest complaint with the 2017 was the seemingly random placement of the steering wheel controls and the dashboard displays. That was corrected in the 2024 model. The rubbers (window seals, etc) of the 2017 dried out making the vehicle noisy and allowing the rains to fill the doors. Short story, I'm really enjoying the 2024. As a footnote, I've used the same door code for my last 5 Fords.

I have a 2023 SPP and it has been perfect except for some bubbling chrome on an interior trim piece.

I have heard cam phasers are a concern and intend to do more frequent oil changes than the factory recommendation and always use top quality synthetic oil.

I have a 2022 Platinum Max and few resolved and unresolved issues for me. #1 complain for me is hard downshifting from 5-3 and some clunky behavior in shifting. It’s like the transmission has a mind of its own where there are good days and bad days. I’m finally going through the powertrain warranty to address the issue. #2 issue was headlight clear coat pealing and my EXP is garage kept. Luckily, the dealer replaced both under the warranty. #3 issue is small knocking noise coming from panoramic sunroof going over small bumps and just can’t seem to figure out what the remedy is and I didn’t trust my dealer to get the job done without creating more issues so I’ve decided make this my lifelong project. There are other small things but it’s not as annoying as my top three mentioned above.

My 2023 has been perfect. I've only had it for five months. Bought it new.
Bought a 2023 new but only within the past 5 months? I'm not understanding the math. Did it sit on the lot for 2 years? That can't be good for seals, gaskets, etc

We came from a 2016 Platinum to a 2025 Platinum, both bought brand new. No major issues on the 2016, good maintenance, 125k miles including long road trips and boat towing and hard mountain elevations. I had a glitch where it didn't operate the power seats and running boards, pulled negative cable on the battery and everything came back. So far no issues.

Ford has set a new record for US vehicle safety recalls in one calendar year - now up to 152 separate recall campaigns in 2025: https://www.foxbusiness.com/markets...erts-issued-year-alone-across-multiple-models

I traded my 2017 Expedition for a 2024. I couldn't be happier. Gauge placement was illogical on the 2017 as were the steering wheel controls. All is better on the new model. The 2024 is noticeably quieter.

Yes. It was part of a cancelled state order. It sat in Ohio for two years. They gave me a new battery, extended the warranty and priced it cheaper than a Ranger. The savings could pay for another.

^^THIS^^

Bad thing is that there is no real, accurate way to confirm whether or not the vehicle you are considering buying has the updated parts, unless you can get access to the stealership's service history, which is generally unlikely......unless you can somehow make getting a full disclosure/confirmation as a contingent part of the deal, as well as a FREE extended warranty, just in case.. :D

OTOH, my brother bought 2x '24 Max's in Dec '24, and at last check, has close to 75K miles on both, but hasn't had a single issue with either one, so perhaps he got lucky & got 2 of them with the updated parts......fingers crossed...
