I have a 2001 XLT with the keypad code for lock. The door actuators work on all doors but the issue I’m most concered about is the drivers door lock linkage not working to lock the door, even with the automatic door lock, it looks locked but you can just open the door. The internal linkages are messed up and the plastic tabs that hold the rods are either broken or missing need a detailed diagram to help rebuild. Also looking for suggestions for the rear passenger doors as they do not open when pulling the handles from the inside like rods are bent. No child lock is engaged. I am trying to keep this beast of a car in working condition as I cannot afford a new car.

Any photos, links to wiring diagrams, or step-by-step breakdowns of the rod-to-latch connection would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Those are very common Gen1 lock issues that usually owe to deteriorated plastic - bushings, clips, end-pieces, etc. The good news is that you can fix them yourself for $20 or so.

I'll be glad to go into more detail if this gets a response.

Thanks for the reply. I may have some pieces that are either broken off or missing now, but if I can help getting this resolved, that would be awesome! This is the main driver door that I want to fix. I’ll pull the door panel off tomorrow and snap a few pics then maybe you can help me from there.

All those linkages wear out and are easy to repair.

I found on my 01, that the 1/4 inch rivets on the rear doors wear out and the heads pop off. In my case a strange black button (anodized) found on the rear carpet. The rivets hold the actuator motor which is quite powerful and rattles the rivet apart eventually. The loose actuator sounds like it is working but it is just slamming around unsecured. Avoid the temptation to remove the rubber encased actuator from the spring metal bracket. (It will be near impossible to reassemble) Instead drill out the offending rivet and use new rivets (requires the big rivet tool Amazon $40) or bolts. Those same type rivets hold the window regulator motor in place, so having the tool will save that as well.

Yeah, if the actuator is bad, that's a completely different jar of flies and good luck fixing it yourself. But first see if any of the door latch linkages have failed. Pull off the trim panel and peel the dust shield back past the inside door handle. Then check that all five latch rods are present and secured at both ends, nothing loose or rattling. How to proceed depends on what you find there.
