I have a I have a 2000 Expedition with a 4.6 L and a hundred eighty thousand miles on it. Since I can remember it's always had a loud ticking almost sounds like an exhaust leak almost but it's not coming from the left side of the engine passenger side I mean. I keep up on maintenance and change the oil in the filter every 5000 miles and I switch to synthetic about Ford oil changes ago and I use 5w 20. Do you think the weight of my oil has anything to do with the ticking sound or what the ticking sound could be? It sounds like a lifter but it's not and I have plenty of oil in there even though it does burn oil. Does anybody have any thoughts of what oil is recommended at least

The exhaust manifold are very common for leaking at the motor, definitely makes a ticking sound. Had a friend with a f150 with 5.4 that had ticking, he took to shop, they fixed manifolds and no more ticking.

You'll get the same sound when a spark plug is about to launch. Check all of your plugs and re torque them
to the new spec of 28 ft lbs and no anti-seize.

It could be broken exhaust manifold studs. Is it louder when cold? Its one of the many reasons, I will not buy another Ford. Its about $500/a side, for a shop to do them. The replacement studs are much stronger. They should been used to begin with. Get near the front wheel well, right after starting and listen.
