Long time lurker, first time poster (finally joined) and come to you guys with an interesting one... My '18 Expedition (June 2018 build date) is making a whining noise that I can't pinpoint. I know about the various other noises (cam phasers, wastegate rattle), but this is a completely new one to me... Here's a quick video - give it about 8 seconds and you'll really hear it:

The whine is apparent whether is's in gear or not, regardless of whether the a/c is on or not. Not really audible from the front of the vehicle, just from the side and underneath - especially towards the trans...

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Sounds like a bad belt or bearing but it's hard to say.

Have you tried an automotive stethoscope to narrow it down?9fce1bdfbc89e33fb535afa946304dc5.jpg

This is a shot in the dark, but my father's old Honda Pilot transmission had a similar sound. We tried everything to find it, including transmission fluid replacement.

A second fluid replacement at the local Honda store fixed it. They said their vacuum system was the key. I personally don't trust vacuuming out a transmission but there you go...

I hope this helps a bit...

Ruled out belt since the noise isn’t present at the front of the engine, but still worth checking with a stethoscope - stranger things have happened... I though about trans, but it’s odd that the noise doesn’t go away in gear... Guess it could be the converter...? Uggh. Thanks for the suggestions!

hey, I get a whine from my ventilated (cooled) seats. Doesn’t happen on 1 or 2, always happens on 3.

lol! Definitely not that! :hahano:

So I expanded my search a bit more and voila - think I found it!

Looks like it’s just another awesome noise that we need to get used to :rotflmao: Nothing to worry about, according to Ford, so I’ll just keep driving it. If it barfs, that’s what the warranty is for.

Thanks all and my apologies for the crappy searching I did lol!

This whine is considered normal for the 10speed:

SSM 47515

Some 2017-2018 F-150, 2018 Expedition/Navigator, 2018-2019 Mustang vehicles equipped with a 10R80 transmission may exhibit a whine noise. This may occur at idle and while driving coming from the bell housing and front pan area of the transmission. The whine noise may become louder when at operating temperature and increases with higher engine RPM in the Park position. A small amount of whine noise is considered to be characteristic of the 10R80 transmission due to the offset gear drivetrain in the front support and has no effect on durability.

Me too, frigging annoying, once you hear it you can never unhear it!!

Holy hell, I think the service guys at my Lincoln dealer thought I was crazy when I told them that every time I had the seat cooler on high I was getting a strange noise, kind of a higher pitched warble. They couldn't duplicate it or couldn't find it. It doesn't happen on the passenger side. I thought maybe I was crazy until I pointed it out to a colleague and he heard it too. Anyway I investigated it a little bit and I think it is being caused by the plastic inlet for the blower getting a vibration from the higher airflow. If I have time one of these days I am going to try coming up with a fix.

My brand new 2020 makes this sounds as well, and I came here looking for shared experiences, so thanks for posting. It drives me nuts, but glad to hear it’s “normal.” Anyone think there’s a chance that switching to a different transmission fluid (AMSOIL?) would have any chance of helping?

I noticed mine has that sound as well. Noticed it right off, figured it was “normal” since nothing seemed amiss while driving. Think I did see that Tech bulletin
