Hey guys. My expy is in the shop right now getting reheated from 3.31’s to 4.10’s. Needed some pressure taken off the trans while towing. The mechanic is installing Yukons and I was curious how many of you have gone through the entire break in period. The internet is of course polarized on it with some saying they went full out the moment they drove out of the shop with no problems. Others went through the whole process. Anyone have any trouble either way?

I did the proper break-in with my Ranger, mainly because I had just dropped 10K turning into my personal mini-monster and wasn't about to take a chance on something so silly.

I just drove normal/easy for 1000 miles, swapped differential fluid, and all good. No issues after a year and I've towed heavy several times.

Where did u get it done. Cost?

A place in Lubbock Texas. It’s still in the shop due to a mishap during the test drive. Bearing came loose and damaged the new gears in the rear diff so they have been reordered. Luckily I wasn’t doing the test drive so it isn’t on me. Quoted $2400 parts and labor for Yukons. Honestly been losing faith in the mechanic shop for blowing the estimated time frame by about three weeks so wouldn’t recommend. But we’re in too deep on the project to bounce. I’ll post once I get it back with a review and the name of the place if the work is good. Feel like that’s fair.

I bought my own components (gears, master rebuild kits, lockers, etc.), removed the differentials from my truck, and dropped everything off at a local differential shop. Labor alone for 2 bench-top rebuilds was $500 per differential.

So got the expy back. Guy asked if we could meet in the middle at $2600 since he had to spend extra money on the ride. Any other time, I would have been upset, BUT it was still cheaper than anywhere else I had checked and I’m pretty sure he lost money on the job. No grinds, no knocks, no screeches, no howls so far. 4x4 works well. Shop is called Total Knockout Auto in Lubbock, TX. Mechanic seems like a nice guy, but just don’t believe the “1 week” install. Took five for me with the set backs due to wrong parts shipped and the gear destroying itself. Excited to have my ride back and that 4 Lo just crawls. So he evidently does solid work. Maybe just a scheduling issue because that shop looked busy…

Curious to see how improved your towing experience is. I tried hauling a car behind my 13 5.4 and it made me really miss my 6.2 super duty. Motor racing and not much happening.

That’s honestly why I went with it. We have a 30 ft TT that’s 4910 dry weight and while my expy pulled it, those 3.31 gears struggled. But I’ve installed a brake controller and 7 pin, a transmission cooler, regeared it and it already has a class four hitch, so I’m hoping altogether it should make a difference.
