New to me 2004 Expedition maintenance?

Whtbronco is correct in that you don't have to move or drop the crossmember to drop the trans pan. My difficulty/pain was after removing all but two bolts and draining as much fluid as I could, I would always spill some (on the ground and me) trying to keep it level lowering it to the ground...

New to me 2004 Expedition maintenance?

I agree with what kep5niner recommended. I have a 2004 Exp 5.4 2v 4x4 with 280,450 miles with no major repairs. It has been the best vehicle I've ever owned in regards to least amount of repairs. Just routine maintenance and easy driving. It has been garage kept and I bought it in 2005 with...

My front and rear wipers work but recently they won't spray water on windshields when I press the spray button.

    To all the Naysayers

You got a good one there at 300,000 miles. My 2004 XLT has 272,000 with no major repairs and I'm hoping to make it to 300,000. Retired now and don't drive it as much and not out of town anymore.

Can't find Motorcraft MERCON ATF for power steering

I have been using Mercon V in my 2004 XLT. I do a drain and fill, not a flush. I bought it used in 2005 and have had zero problems with my power steering.

    Changing forgotten fluids

When I changed my transfer case fluid, I used Motorcraft Transfer Case Fluid which I purchased at dealership. Still have a couple bottles left over for next time.

    Tune up or leave alone?

I would like to see them too. Whenever I do get the plugs changed, I will take a photo of them and come back and post them here. It may not be long but right now it's running very smooth and no codes showing any problems. I'll be happy if I can get 300,000 miles out of this vehicle.

    Tune up or leave alone?

Yes, hard to believe. No other vehicle I've owned in my life has been this trouble free. Original engine, transmission, water pump, radiator, fuel pump, starter, alternator, power steering pump, and no suspension or drive train work. Probably 75% highway miles before retiring 8 years ago. I...

    Tune up or leave alone?

It's your vehicle but if its running very smooth I would leave it alone until it starts idling rough. My 2004 XLT has just over 270,000 miles and I've only had one spark plug and coil pack replaced about 8 years ago and it still idles like new and gets an average of 15 mpg. Other than brakes...

    10 mpg

Just to double check your vehicle's mpg, calculate it manually over the next few tank fill-ups. My expedition gets 16 on highway and 14 around town and the vehicle's computer shows average of 15.

What do you pay for an oil change?

DIY for a little over $20. From Walmart a Havoline 6qt. bulk oil in a box and $4 FL820 filter. I save empty kitty litter plastic container for disposal of used oil.

    100k tuneup time

Only replaced one plug and coil pack out of the original eight when I got a misfire code. Still running great after 16 years and 268,000 miles.

    Mercon ATF for power steering?

Mercon V is what I use in my 2004 XLT. Fortunately no leaks yet but about once every two years I use turkey baster to remove what I can and refill with fresh Mercon V. What you suggest is what I would do as the Lucas can't hurt.

    New old Expedition owner

Glad you were able to fix your cruise control. We have been very fortunate with our 2004 Expedition 5.4 4x4 with mostly highway miles. The only time our cruise control quit working is after I picked it up from our local shop after getting a couple heater hoses replaced near the firewall. I...

Source for interior parts for my new to me 04 Expy? Broken rear storage bin handle...

My sun glasses holder hinges cracked and the little door would hang down all the time. I temporarily clear taped it shut until I could repair or replace it with a gray colored one. It took me off and on a year before I found just the gray plastic door on Ebay for $35. Is this what you are...

How many miles on your 2nd Gen Ford Expedition?

Don, thanks for your response. Very interesting history on your very low mileage Expedition. I like your two "back up" vehicles to your Expedition! :)

How many miles on your 2nd Gen Ford Expedition?

That is amazing! Never heard of a ford gas engine with that many miles on original engine. Has the transmission been replaced or is it original?

How many miles on your 2nd Gen Ford Expedition?

Mr. Hall, is that a typo on the miles? If not, then that might be a record for the lowest miles on a 16 yr. old Expedition!
