When is the last time it had the plugs changed?
I went through that with my '99. Plugs wore and got all kinds of awesome misfire codes.
But, if the cams are out of time, that could cause all kinds of gremlins to show up.

Have'nt done it yet afraid to heard that they break

There is a procedure to get them out without breaking them. You spray them down with PB Blaster when the engine is cold, let them sit for 1/2 hour, then start the engine and run it for 5 minutes and then spray them again. Wait an hour then try to give them an 1/8 turn, respray with PB Blaster, and wait another hour, then try to give them another 1/8 turn and spray again, wait another hour give them another 1/8 turn and spray again. etc until they loosen and begin to turn.

That doesn't make a lot of sense. It seems like it should be something they could fix.

Sounds retarded to me... (da dum ching!)
How could a cam phasing issue mean you need a new motor!?!? I would get a second opinion...

I think they are messing with you with the "retard" code. It's time for a new shop, or at least a hellava lot better description.
