Ford says the engine can't be fixed and needs to be replaced. I already have a 2012 Expedition, and can't afford the time or expense of a new engine. Everything else is near mint. Even the seat heaters work! What do I do with it?

1) Hold on to it until you can fix it

2) Sell it for whatever you can get for it

3) Get a second opinion and the facts of why it needs a new engine - not all dealerships are looking out for the customer

Excellent idea about the second opinion. I'm not thinking clearly. It's all still new. If it is shot, I want someone to be able to benefit from the parts I have.

Unfortunately 2005-2007 5.4 Ford engines were problem child's. Seems like they either worked, or were plagued with cam sensor issues, oiling issues, and so on. Quite a few of our members have had mechanical, as well as other issues. Like a medical condition, definitely get a second opinion. I would get a qualified non dealer shop to do your second. Keep us posted, Moose.

Another option:

If you are limited in auto knowledge but have a garage, consider taking the engine apart yourself in order to learn more about it. You don't really have to worry about messing it up - it already is. When you get a a point you are not sure on how to do something, post it here.

Should you decide to give it a shot, working in an organized fashion is paramount to success.

No garage, unfortunately.

Stamp brings up great alternatives.

My situation and .02: When mine went, she was only 13 years young, low miles, and perfect for me. Blue Oval wanting nothing to do with it, literally, but researching I went rebuilt from the guy that had the business for all blue oval modular motors rebuilds, vice the outlay of another near $50K and monthly payments. Wasn't crazy expensive at the time and came with a 3 yo/36K warranty.

it's a tough decision esp. if you are a two, or more, car family and discretionary income.

I was in same boat at 102k ... 4.6l with hole in piston. I had another 4.6 and went 225k and still going with no major repairs. Long story but I wanted it fixed right. Had a dealer install ford reman, all new rubber, new injectors, it came with a new water pump too. Then a few thousand miles under warranty a cam hold down cracked. Different dealer replaced entire cylinder head. 55k miles later it is a daily driver. Also after the engine was changed, I cleaned throttle body out, new coils, entire walker exhaust with new cats (the old ones were oiled) and 4 new oxygen sensors. Then front wheel bearings, all new struts- quicklift, and 4 new alum wheels, fan blend door, and turn signal stick.
The repair shops do not want to tie one bay for 14 hour of book time, risk of nonpayment. And keep in mind it is all negotiable. Look at Tasca parts etc and use a level. 2nd opinion is good too... probably need a tow. If you like the truck go for it. New ones are way too expensive!! Used do not really know what you got either.
