How often should you have to replace the coils on a 5.4 in a 2001 XLT? I bought one about 2 months ago wih 114K on it and had to replace 1 when I got it and my mechanic had to replace on at his expense about a week ago (he got it wet during a radiator flush) now today I went out and started it and got a check engine light and it was running rough after sitting overnight and I suspect its another coil. I will get it on a computer tomorrow to find out for sure but I wanted to know how often do these need to be replaced or do you just do it as they fail? How could one fail just sitting in the driveway overnight? Any help would be appreciated.--Thanks!

Maybe an easier question is how difficult is it to replace the coils yourself? Anyone?

I replaced all of mine a few days ago. I did a plug change also so I cannot give you a ballpark on how long it should take to do just the coils. I'm not a mechanic, don't play one on tv nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night but I didn't think it was hard at all. In my experience, if I start getting frustrated, I crack a brew, smoke a cigarette and then go back at it. Seems to keep my blood pressure low. Take your time, take a few breaks and before you know it, you're done.

BTW, I ordered my coils from Ebay based off of positive experience from others here and paid $69.50 with free shipping and had them in 3 days. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-IGNITIO...=Model:Expedition&vxp=mtr&hash=item5891c1209f

I didn't think it would be too bad to change them. It looks like take the bolt out, unplug the old one and plug the new one in and put it back on. I was looking at a set of them on Ebay too but I think I will use the seller that you guys used. Any more input would be great since this is my first Expedition and I am alot more familiar with the Explorers.

Coils are fairly easy to replace on my '01, although #8 can be a real PITA.

My 12 year old son and I replaced plugs 1-4 a week ago. Just need to get 5-8 done here before too long. He has never worked on a vehicle before and I've never done plugs on the Expy. Took us a little over an hour to pop the coils, clean everything, replace the plugs and put it all back together. I probably could have done it in less time by myself, but the experience and time with him was worth it.

It's not so difficult...it's just mechanic...

I have actually problems with my coils too. Ordered e new set...

You can do it in 3 hours all the 8 with plugs and coils, with built in rails...
The only problem ist to know how to lie on the motor... :)
(Ford Europa has 8 hours in theyr' books, what for me looks like a joke!)
1,2,3,5,6,7 are easy, 4 and 8 funny...

You only need the right tools, including a magnet with longer range...
And belive me: your hands can go at places where you never thougth...:signs8:

I work on drivability on ford v8s all the time and you can not predict when the coils will fail-new or old. I have had coils only last 2 miles and others have 300k miles on them so if they are not broke dont fix them. I would just carry a small code reader and 2 extra coils and you should be fine.
