It starts and runs fine but when I'm sitting still at a light, it will start to idle rough and do the shake and die. Starts back up fine.....It kind of feels like it's running out of gas? I have no clue.

It doesn't happen all the time but just started the other day and happens about 50% of the time.

If I put it in neutral at the stoplight and rev the engine, it stays going and doesn't die.

Anyway, if anyone has any clues, let me know.

Thanks,

J

Nice, thanks!

Yes, it did start with the cold weather.

Is this something I can fix myself or do I need to take it somewhere?

Doing it yourself I guess would be up to you, I'm not sure level of comfort working on your vehicles. It doesn't really require any special tools beyond a torque wrench. If you do decide to do it I would replace the plugs and consider changing the hard to reach coils at the same time as they are much easier to get to with the manifold off.

And when you say coils, what do you mean?

And when you say coils, what do you mean?

If you need to ask that question then maybe you should consider taking it to a shop.

He suggested replacing the plugs. In order to replace plugs You must remove the coils.
The coils are over the plugs (ignition Coils) or as also referred to "COP's"

So i'm looking at ignition coils.....i see a variety of different prices....motorcraft set for 240 or 55 bucks a piece....then i see a whole set for 70 bucks.

Does this really matter?

I have already purchased motorcraft plugs, but I'm not sure on the coils

Ignition coils vary in quality just like they vary in price. Obviously the best choice is going to be Motorcraft, but I have had pretty good luck with both Delphi and Denso as well. I would definitely pass on the cheap coils or you will be doing the job again.
Also, if you haven't already, I would suggest getting a subscription to Alldata or at least a Chiltons repair manual and look over the job before deciding to do the work yourself.

Makes sense, any luck with ACDelco?

Their set runs around $115.

And thanks for the advice, I will definitely do that. Could use it for future jobs as well!

I've watched a few videos of the job a handful of times and I'm fairly confident that I can do this.... I work on lots of other stuff, just not cars.

You can also get a Ford Factory Service Manual on DVD on e-bay cost $15.00

Much better than the generic Chilton, Haynes or Clymer manuals

I wouldn't dream of putting Chevy (GM) coils on my Ford, AC Delco really?
When in doubt always go with OEM Motorcraft stuff, price premium is not really that much.

I get Chiltons through my library. Its free and online.

You get what you pay for If you like using a generic manual then go for it

The Ford Factory is specific to your year also has wiring diagrams showing connector pin layouts and locations plus much more
