I am looking to replace the front shocks on my expedition. The problem I am running into is getting the shock out of the coil spring. I've found many write ups on how to get the coil over spring assembly out, but nothing on safely removing / reinstalling the shock.

Do i rent a deathstick from my local autopart store? Do i take the assembly out and have my local mechanic replace the shock?

I suppose im just a little intimidated by the coil spring.

Once you get the assembly out of the wheel-well, get a good spring compressor to compress the spring, then remove the upper nut. The shock will come right out. But expect the top nut on the shock shaft to be very rusted if these are the original shocks. You might have to cut it off to remove the shock. Ask me how I know!!

Thanks for the reply Stoned06. I was looking at the Monroe quick strut replacement for these. Cuts down on installation time, replaces bushings and eliminates tool rental.

Brodi, that sounds like a good idea if you don't want to mess with a spring compressor. They can actually be dangerous if not used correctly. First thing I would do is a search on the monroe struts to see what kind of feedback they have, especially the ride quality. I'm not saying they are bad, just do your homework on them. Maybe someone on here has used them and can let you know if they are good or not.
What part of Cincy you from. I grew up and lived most of my life there.
