In need of some help with my wife's 2006 XLT, ~160k miles. A few weeks ago we were riding around town and I felt a hard shudder/buck around 40-50 mph. It only did it once and then I didn't feel it again. She was driving so I don't know what position the throttle was so I can't provide that info. Lately, it does it at least once every time we drive it. Everything else seemed ok until yesterday. I was outside and I could hear her coming down the road (about 100yds away) and I could hear a fairly high pitched sound. Kinda sounded like a whistle, kinda sounded like a squeak, also. It did not sound like a brake issue.

Not sure where to start. I wondered if the buck/shudder could be a misfire so I hooked up my scanner but she's not throwing any codes. The plugs are right at 60k so I'm planning on changing them soon anyway but I don't think they're the problem this time.

I tried to crawl underneath and look around but I recently had elbow surgery so I'm not as mobile as I'd like to be. The u-joints seemed tight, maybe a tiny bit of seepage around the caps. The trans and transfer case were dry, as in no leaks. The front differential is leaking from around the diff cover and I also noticed a pretty good sized damp spot around the "flange" where the inner axle bolts to the outer half-shaft.

Could this be a trans issue, a front diff issue, maybe a hub/bearing issue. Just not sure what else to do to pinpoint the problem. I don't want to just start throwing parts at it. Thanks in advance for any insight.

I was getting the same sort of issue. I assumed it was a cop going bad. It was not throwing codes, but I did not want to wait until the wrong time to have to change it. I ran the live test feature on TorquePro and found that one cylinder showed a handful of misfires. Replaced that cop, and all was fine.

Thanks Eight. I am keeping this in mind, but it really feels like it is something in the drivetrain. I had a bad COP a few years ago but this buck/jerk feels different than that. Anyone else have any input? TIA.
