From what i have read here on the forum, do it cold, pull coils and shoot some pb blaster( or equivalent) down the holes the night before and a lot of luck.

I'd advise having the removal tool on hand.

Lisle 65600

I've had great success with it.

There are lots of theories cold, hot, warm engine, impact wrench, lots of miracle oil in a low tank of gas beforehand, carb cleaner or seafoam in the plug holes the night before, back and forth wrench action, etc. but if it had a previous owner you can hope he updated them. If you don't need the truck every day you can get an extractor from ebay or get one in advance and then sell it . There are other extractors that are just as good as the expensive Lisle and you could break anywhere from none of them to all of them. The plugs were updated a while back to sp515 and then later to sp546. Neither one will break and the 515's are cheaper and run perfectly in my truck. Don't get any other brand than Motorcraft. I the original ones were PZH 14's.

Do the carb cleaner and let it sit for 2+ hours, you likely won’t have any breakage. I loosened them 1/4 turn and sprayed wells with carb cleaner on both my 2007’s. Zero out of the sixteen plugs broke.

Spray and pray..

(PB Blaster, not a gun..)

It's been..what..5 years since the last new Expy was made with a 5.4?
Stuff like this ought to be common knowledge by now ;)

Let us know how it turns out, OP.

I just did them on my 07 but I'm assuming the previous owner had done them before because they weren't too bad. I ran a bottle of the marvelous mystery oil (or whatever it's called) through a few tanks of gas first and then when it was time I pulled the coil packs and got some PB Blaster in there for a few hours. They all came out pretty easily after that, I also used air to blow everything down before I pulled the plugs and after to get all the carb cleaner out of things. Anyways that's my experience and good luck!

I echo the PB Blaster. I would also replace the boots as well while you’re at it. Helpful hint. I used a piece of gas line to extract and replace the plugs, as well as using anti seize paste and dielectric grease on the boots. Always use Motorcraft plugs and you will never have a problem.

I wouldn't replace any boots that are in good shape. Use a real spark socket with the rubber inside, not a rubber tube, and tape it to your extension. Use a tiny bit of dielectric on the end or it will attract dirt etc.

I basically followed the TSB:
Before removing plugs, airhosed the wells really thorough
Cracked plugs loose 1/8 turn
Used carb cleaner, let soak (in my case 1/2 hour
Very carefully removed. When meeting undue resistance, backed in slightly and another dose of carb cleaner.

Some were - difficult. But none broke.

Used a soft air hose to blow out cylinders while plugs were out. Got rid of excess carb cleaner if any in cylinders and hopefully any debris that may have gotten in.
Used nickel based anti-sieze on new plugs.

And the batch of MOTORCRAFT plugs I got had two defective, one immediately apparent, the other the center electrode broke up in the porcelain and dropped down against the snout after a couple thousand miles. Had to replace that one.

Oh yeah, unmounted computer(s) to access #4.

I changed my '11s 5.4 plugs last year warm with no extra precautions and experienced zero issues. Good luck with yours man. Sound advice.
