This is one of the worst OEM intakes I have seen in a while. Those "appendages" that I have highlighted in a red square are supposed to act as resonators to silence the air going in through the intake which I feel is totally useless. It's not like the air is going to be going at 200mph through the intake!!

I want to keep the stock air box but I haven't seen any intakes that will allow me to do that. That being said, I was thinking of running aluminum piping with silicone couplers all the way back to the throttle body. Any thoughts on that?

I agree, I have a 2011 with the gotta mod and would like to do just the tube but no one sells just that part. I have heard that the aftermarket intakes are noticeably louder though which I really don't care for.

thats a mess for an intake...to make it quiet...dont think you'd notice that much if the silence was gone

Appendages, resonators, silencers...who needs quiet. It's a V8, it needs a little growl...

All there to silence the "growl" which most adult males like anyways. :)

Need a silencer for my intake because its noisy as hell when I get on it.
Don't think they make one that would work though...

i had an afe intake on my 2011 for a few days, car was acting a bit weird with the afe intake installed, so i took it off, that was on a 5star tune, back to using my superchips again, so i might give it a shot.

RayT - please report back. I am running the superchips right now and my next step is an intake. I had the Volant on my 03 and was happy with it - but if there is something better-I would try it. The superchips has been okay - shifting is straightened out some - but I definitely wanted more. I am currently running the eco tune because premium bumped back over $4.00 here, but honestly can not tell much of a difference between performance with 93 and eco with 87. also mileage is still sitting right at 13 by lie-o-meter. I will say that with the perf tune, it sometimes felt like second wanted to chirp.I am heavy tow, 2wd standard length with 3.37 (i believe, whatever the highest ratio is offered)

I have the K&N intake and the Superchips Cortex tuner. I also have the CAI tunes. The intake is noticeably louder. I have had it for a little over a year. My wife still asks me if I have made it louder. Its got a nice grown when accelerating and is quiet when cruising. I logged the intake temp and it runs withing a few degrees of ambient when moving and it will climb a little when stopped at a light. I was hearing that the 3 valve motors might not run right and through codes with a CAI. After I got the K&N I bought the updated tunes from Superchips and the truck runs great. I know the tuner made a huge difference in how the truck ran. With the intake it runs a little better.

Here is what they post on their site for improvements.

Power Level Max HP Gain Max Torque Gain
87 39.0 HP @ 4500 RPM 45.4 TQ @ 4500 RPM
TOW 34.7 HP @ 4500 RPM 42.0 TQ @ 3550 RPM
91 PERFORMANCE 37.1 HP @ 3500 RPM 57.2 TQ @ 3500 RPM

It wouldn't mind the noise from the intake (hell my little Mazda is pretty loud) but the wife drives this around the most so I need to keep her happy so I can keep on modding.

When I plug my Cortex in to upgrade I had the option to purchase the CAI tunes.

I took my stock intake and cut all that crap off, then fiberglassed over the holes and shot a coat of black paint on it. No increase in noise, but I did get a increase in throttle response. I ended up putting the modded intake on my 2010 F150 and built an aluminium intake for the Expo.

Its a little rough because it started raining on me while I was sanding, but the inside is smooth.

Ok, after hearing the intake, I am thinking I am going to get the full intake. I am looking at the K&N and the AFE, pretty much the same price, same specs and everything. What is the consensus, which one should I get. I like to get input from everyone on what they have and like, so send me your vote. Thanks all.

I am leaning that way, it looks like it uses the lower part of the factory filter box, if so, did you do the gotts mod to it as well, seems like you would still benefit from taking out that snorkel.

Also, take a look at the AFE unit, looks pretty nice as well and the filter looks like it is bigger which means more surface area, more air flow. Let me know what you think.

The heat shield clips to the bottom part of the original air box. I never did the GOTTS, just couldn't really see a need. The cone is sucking air from 360 degrees anyway.
Either one is gonna increase air flow, as right now yours is breathing through a straw. I've been a loyal K&N user for years, I just stuck to what I know. Not to knock AFE, Airaid, Spectre, etc... K&N started it!

^ This is what I had in mind originally.

Dib, so is the K&N breathing hot air from the engine compartment? This is one of the reasons I wanted to keep the OEM airbox.
