2016 Expy Limited 4wd 51k on odometer.
Factory remote start wont work and driver door chimes when ever opened with the ignition off.
Forscan shows remote start failure due to car not in park. No DTCs listed on any modules.

BdyCM.RSF1_PARK yes
All other BdyCM.RSF1_XXX are no
However the following PIDs are showing (All the PIDs I could find related to transmission being in park):
PAM.TRANSGR not reverse
PCM.TR park
PCM.TR_CRANK yes
PCM.IN_GEAR no
LTM.TRANSGEAR park

Any ideas on what is causing the problem? Or what I should be looking at to narrow the scope of testing? Any other PIDs I should check?
I have forscan. I also have a multimeter and know how to use it.

Others with the 2015 - 2017 Expedition have posted this issue. It was resolved by replacing the transmission shift assembly under the front seat shifter console. The unit fails, telling the computer that the shifter is not in the park position, when it is. That is the reason for the door chime when the engine is turned off and the LF door opened, and the remote start not working.

The PCM.TR shows the car is in park and the value changes appropriately when I shift. The LTM.TRANSGEAR shows the car is in park. The liftgate button on the dash works when I shift into park and not when the car is in drive or reverse. Most of the system seems to think the car is in park. I do not get "Car is not in park" message on the display like I get when I shut it down in gear and open the driver door.

Is there 2nd output from the shifter that goes somewhere else and shows it is not in park? Is there a code I can monitor? Is there some other module involved?

I opened up the center console and checked out the shifter. After disconnecting the shifter electronics, the drive select indicator on dash was still working. After further investigation, the drive select indicator is tied to the transmission range sensor. I will have to jack up the expy tomorrow to see if the sensor is misaligned. Anybody have the pin outs and expected readings for it?

I forgot to post this fix. After pulling out the shifter I found a very cheap piece of plastic which is part of a defective design broke. The spring puts way to much tension on the arm of the part for its construction and molded thickness to the support tube. The arm has a roller that is responsible for the detents felt when shifting from drive to L2 and L1. When this part breaks, the spring hits the switch which signals the car is in park and knocks it out of alignment.

I built a new arm out of aluminum. The structural integrity of the part will more than hold the tension of the spring. As I did not have my TIG welder yet, I had to screw the pieces together. I also had to make it beefier than required to hold the screws. The tube is brazed to the arm. 20201210_213047.jpg 20201210_213057.jpg

This image shows the new part in place on the shifter. The red blue and black wires underneath the part go to the switch that tells the car the transmission is in park. Ford does not sell this crappy part, only the whole shifter assembly.

Nicely done! If you can replicate those at a reasonable cost you may have a neat little niche market to serve.

I’m impressed - my compliments.

Just in case people have the switch itself fail as I did. The Dorman 905-026 is an exact replacement for the switch and the plastic piece that breaks is not required for the shifter to work correctly. I fixed mine by simply replacing the switch for $22, now I have a park indicator again and remote start is working again as well.

And if anyone wants to replace the whole shifter with new, know that part # FL7Z-7210-BB (which is for a Navigator) is a couple hundred dollars cheaper and works just fine. You do have to move the pre-installed mounting screws to different holes on the shifter (at least on my 2017 XLT).
