2018 Expo Max - Timing Chain or Bust

2018 with 240k on it has started with the Timing Chain rattle. Local shop estimates about $6kCAD to fix. What’s the likelihood it will be the phasers next?

Engines totally blow my mind and I (not from a lack of trying) just can’t get my head around mechanical stuff.

Is it time to move on?

At that many miles.........the chain rotate the phasers. The new improved cam phasers can be purchased in a complete set (4). One might consider doing the chain guides and misc components and perhaps the water pump while at. All a preventive maintenance items.

Canada, so likely ~149K miles if that 240K is kilometers... Solid advice if holding onto it regardless.

That seems pretty fair. Here in USA in the Deep South, I was quoted 3K for timing chain and phasers. I will get it fixed and then start planning on a replacement. However, I try and keep my stuff running as long as economically possible. Even better, if it is paid for and reliable, keep it as a spare car.

If you chose to repair, just make sure it's a good shop. These engines seem to be so risky to open and work on, so many parts, like valve covers, that just don't go back together well without issues. I would also bet that with that many miles, you should have already or could end up having some of the heater hose issues, coolant line issues, other items. There's a lot of stuff that's easier to replace while you're in there. Like others said, water pump, I would say thermostat as well.

I have a leaky timing cover on a 2019 with 98K miles. Dealer quoted me $4800 to fix the leak. Googling matches what you're saying on cost for replacing the chain. So why is just fixing the leak $1800 more than replacing the chain since you're basically going to have to clean and reseal the timing chain cover anyways. Dealership price gouging?
