On that note, not sure how old you are or anything about you personally, but I remember when a $400 dishwasher would last ten years, now a $1k dishwasher may last 1-2, sometimes more, but it's becoming increasingly harder to get parts and skilled techs to fix them, so it's almost like you have to get a new one every few years. Good example, one of my good friends (an attorney), just had an LG dishwasher die after 2 yrs. Cost $1k and LG told him they couldn't repair it under warranty because they didn't have a licensed tech within 200 miles of him... Offered him no recourse, he thought about suing as he is an attorney, but the cost and time would have been more than a new dishwasher, and he would never trust it again. So he made sure not to buy an LG again.
Old enough to buy appliances. When I was shopping for a washer and dryer I was given some good advice from a Lowe's sales associate (which has been backed up by service techs I have spoken to). The Korean appliance brands (LG and Samsung) don't stock parts regularly in North America. So they may function well and be well designed and/or affordable. But if you need a part that commonly fails you are probably out of luck. I bought Whirlpool and I've been very happy with the choice, because I had the knowledge beforehand. In the parlance of our times, "LG gonna LG". That information was probably out there at the time and it's a waste of time to demand retroactively that a company design, build, and sell appliances (or vehicles) a certain way. I didn't buy a Toyota even though they're more reliable because there were needs that vehicle wouldn't meet for me, and as a result I am not gong to complain about the fact that it's less reliable. I've had difficulty at times getting Ford to fix my issues correctly but in the end they've done me right and things have stayed fixed. That's acceptable to me and it's ridiculous to expect Ford to be better than that when there is zero evidence to support it.

$400 in 1985 is equivalent to $1,000 today.

A $1k Dishwasher only lasting 1-2 years?!

My last dishwasher lasted 10 years (Bosch) and was still going when I removed it to renovate the kitchen. My new dishwasher, Asko, was $1000 and has been running 5 days a week for 2.5 years.

I know this is a silly small sample size but I don’t buy into the whole “they don’t make them like they used to!” mantra.

I will say that USER serviceability is virtually non existent...that much is true.

There's always exceptions to the rule. You just named two higher end brands, however. We had a Whirlpool Gold Series dishwasher that didn't even last 3 years of daily use. I'm sure it could match some of the Bosch prices out there too. I replaced the pump once and when it needed further repairs decided to cut my losses and went back to a BOSCH. IMO Bosch is one of the best out there in terms of durability vs money spent. I also love the built in water softener as it gets the dishes ultra clean.

Now we're really getting OFF TOPIC lmao.

He mentioned $1000 price point and both of those happen to be at that price point which is why I even commented at all.

But yeah I digress.

Honestly though if a thread about a vehicle having issues didn’t devolve into:

1) All brands have issues but my brand is still more gooder than XYZ brand!

Or

2) Yup. You kids don’t know anything. Back in my day they made toasters out of granite and nuclear reactors. Cost a nickel and lasted for 100 years!

Ignorance comes in all flavors, sizes and ages.

I find the dishwasher comments amusing. Hoping mine doesn't crap the bed. I've had it since 2009, it's a GE, says quietpower 3 on the door. I don't remember what I paid for it, probably around 400, 500 bucks. Never had an issue with it, aside from having to take the rotating thing that shoots water out, and blow it out occasionally.

Interesting flip side to this example, sort of, I had an LG dehumidifier that one year warranty, plus I think 2-3 on sealed system (think that's what they called it, maybe just the compressor) anyway, it quit working after 1.5 years. I had originally purchased on EBay, brand new sealed box, from an appliance dealer on there. Anyway, it quit working and I contacted them, they said that they don't have anyone around my area that can fix it. Asked for a receipt, I said I didn't have one, they said ok, write a letter stating what you believe you paid and we will send you a prepaid credit card in that amount, which they did! Sure it was only $300, but I was impressed!

Interesting, not sure if this was meant to be a degrading and a bit insulting to someone posting something they had personally experienced or not, sure feels like it. I shall leave it at that.

Someone who thinks and posts that $1k dishwashers only last 1 year “these days” deserves a little pushback. [emoji2369]

I have you an example of someone very close to me that had an issue. And to be clear, I said 1-2.

My $1k dishwasher failed at just over 1 yr, but luckily it became a recall and kitchenaid had to replace the parts.

Lastly, the the consumer price index from 2000 to 2020 is only 53%, so a $400 dishwasher in 2000 would effectively cost $600 today, if they were as like for like as possible.

I'm a little more edumacated than I may sound... Lol. Oh and push back is fine, just ask me why I think something, rather than jump to I'm ignorant. That could mean a lot of things.

No, it was kinda of a response in general..nothing against anyone in particular whatsoever.

Gotcha. Honestly though when people speak about the “good old days” in terms of appliances and cars they aren’t talking about the dotcom/y2k era which is why I used 1985 as the “good old days”...

I had an LG Dishwasher. The worst. LG has few technicians. It would leak, overheat parts, would not clean, etc. I had an extended warranty. The first tech who was smart, just shotgunned a bunch of parts and left me the "bad" ones because the computer diagnostics pointed to everything. The second tech had no clue how to properly measure water temperature from a tap. Clue, the water is always hotter resting in a glass than while aerated out of a faucet. So he blamed my water heater. I kept it going using the parts left from the first service call. Finally the drain hose burst and flooded my place.

Your attorney friend should have sued them . A class action is in order.

Flame related story. Few years ago I was snowmobiling near Old Forge on Uncas Rd. Someone's sled caught fire on the trail and burned to a heap. Over the next 24 hours scavengers came and picked the entire pile clean. I mean there was NOTHING left but maybe some springs or something. It was like watching a deer disappear.

Reviving an old thread here, apologies...

As I posted here in a different thread, our car recently went into limp mode and has a fuel injector port stuck open that managed to dump enough fuel that it came leaking out the muffler.

Thinking about that much fuel making its way around/throughout the hot exhaust system had me (a) instantly concerned for fire safety with this vehicle and (b) remembering this old thread.

@Aspen03: Was there ever an official explanation from Ford or the fire marshal, what have you, as to the cause of the fire?

And to add to it, there was this less than a mile from where I live. Luckily the dog in back was rescued by police.

Truly nervous for my kids strapped into car seats, not to mention that mine is garaged all the time, this happened outdoors, now do I have to worry about my house going with it?

That's made international news. Do you know details of the fire?
