I started my wife's Expedition (<30k miles) and it idled poorly for about 15 seconds. During that time it sounded like it was going to sputter out and die. It righted itself and then immediately the check engine light came on. I called our dealer and while I was on the phone with the service manager he was able to tap into the car and said it had a misfire on a cylinder and it was showing a history of running lean.

They've had the car for 2 weeks now and when I called yesterday to ask about the status they said the tech was unable to get it to communicate with Ford's diagnostic software due to too many Ford techs trying to log in and use the same system. They called today and said the check engine light had cleared itself and they weren't able to pull up any codes and for me to come pick it up.

Does this sound legit?

No. Not a legitimate repair.

As long as your Fordpass is set up, any codes your truck has get reported to the cloud and the history of those codes is kept for 60 days. The codes are accessible with PTS/OASIS which is a website all Ford service departments have access to. If the code was there before and now it is gone, then it is what it is. I have seen codes that report a hard fault go away by themselves on many vehicles including my own truck.

However, that line about not being able log in because too many techs have tried to log in is BS. Yes, the system will block out a user for x amount of time after a few failed log in attempts, but it won't block everyone out from accessing one particular vehicle.

If I were here, you would know it !
Time to find a new dealer :D

FYI, the lights/warning may go off/away, but that doesn't necessarily mean the actual problem does, or that it corrected itself, which is highly unlikely....

My son's '09 Impala had the check engine light come on a few weeks ago, and I found the code for a "bank 1 failure" on the catalytic convertor.... I cleared the code and the CEL went off.....for about a week, then it came back on....did the same routine over the next few weeks before getting it fixed :)

They just didn't anything until you called them yesterday. Find another dealership if you could.
