On my '98 EB 4x4 when I shift to AWD the dash light blinks but when I'm in 4x4 high or low it's constant. Does this imply the AWD function isn't working?

yes it means the A4WD is not working. i just had this issue start on my '98. it looks to be one of the two HALL sensors in the transfer case.

I don't think I'll worry about it at this time. 4x4 high and low work fine and that takes care of my needs for now.

Forgot are the hall sensors internal or external on the transfer case?

inside and my front sensor is the issue for me, to replace this you have to remove the shift motor.
i run in 4x4 6 months out of the year all the time, i like the A4wd setting for fall/spring when there is spotty ice/snow and in parking lots. i'll worry about fixing mine some time this winter before spring hits.
