And this is the reason I love forumsAlso you say you solonoid was cracked.... that might mean water got in your vacuum system and froze n cracked it, if water gets in the system it can corrode your hubs and they may be stuck half engaged half unengaged. Even if your system fails in an engaged or semi engaged position, it doesn’t mean your 4WD will work. Pull the lines at the hubs and see if they have vacuum at the end of the run...
Also jack the front of your truck up in 2HI and leave the engine off. Turn the front wheels one at a time by hand, they should spin with the half shaft and be locked in when off as the vacuum is not present to disengage the hubs.
Not necessarily. There is a check valve that is supposed to keep them unlocked when vacuum is not present. There is certainly some leak-down, temperature change will cause it to lose vacuum, etc, but they can and do stay unlocked without engine vacuum.
