Hey All,
I just ordered a ZF5 that I plan to install into my 2001 Expedition. I already have a pedal set, and it looks like the expe tranfer will bolt right up. What I need to figure out now is the computer. Does any one have any thoughts on how the computer is going to react to the lack of trans inputs? I assume I will be able jumper out the input for the neutral safety. I am not concerned with a check engine light, it has been on for years.
Thanks in advance,
spolcyn

If you're going to all that trouble, you may just want to go to a stand alone ecu. The guys on 'Trucks' just used one when they swapped in a Marauder 32v motor and a manual trans in to a Ranger. It used the stock harness.

I think it would be easier than trying to figure out what was going on with the stock computer.

What bell housing, clutch, flywheel and shifter are you using?

You may be able to use the shift position sensor to tell the computer that your in Drive, and have a start over ride some how by using the wiring schematics. I still think without the output sensor from the transmission, your gonna have a wierd acting computer, and possibly abs lights.

The standalone computer idea sounds good if you know a shop that can program it. Or possibly a shop can reprogram your computer to ignore the error codes thrown by a missing transmission signal. For instance, I have the SCT tuner and my tuner was able to basically make the check engine light completely stop giving me O2 sensor codes caused by emptied converters.

nvycrmn,
Not much off-roading of the expe, but I use it to tow my off-roader, a 74 bronco. I just hate automatics. Think about how much fun it would be to bang gears in that big ol ride of yours.
tonydiv,
I am not certain what you mean, a stand alone ECU. I could buy an ECU from a manual shift 5.4 F-250. I am using a trans out of a 2001 F-250 SD with a 5.4. It is a ZF 5 speed (S5 47M) and the bellhousing is part of the casting. I ordered a new clutch and a flywheel for the same vehicle. I hope the shifter comes with the used tranny I am currently waiting to arrive. The pedals are out of a manual shift F-150. Also odered a body lift to give a little clearance underneath.
joezek,
Thank you for the info. I can clearly see that this is going to get interesting.
Thank All,
spolcyn

I wonder if there will be more problems with the F250 computer because it has to communicate with all the other computers. There's the ABS computer, body control module etc. I think they're all seperate, and could be communication issues. Then again, since they're both Ford, maybe the communication is not a problem.

Hey nvycrmn,
Here are a couple of pictures of the ol bronco. She is not much to look at but she is quite the trail rig. Until I get the expe done she also is my daily driver. It is a good thing that I live close to work (bad road manners).
