For some people they live on a strict budget because of this damn economy, so $65 could go for like a week of groceries, if ya budget right. Your right though, there's no problem in charging for a diagnostic.

What I was trying to explain is get that "stupid printout" first. On the print out is a code or codes. With a little bit of self research you should be able to find out the problem yourself. Then if you can't figure out the problem or it's too big of a problem go to your mechanic and pay the fees.

I know, if I owned my own shop I would HATE this system, because your losing customers, but people are having the self satisfaction of fixing problems on their own with little or no knowledge of auto mechanics.

With people struggling to survive these days, yes I feel a diagnostic charge is BS.

Where it is even a bigger issue in my area is that to get a Lic from the county you have to be ASE certified. So technically if you are note certified in Engine Performance you are not allowed to charge for that type of work. Or even do that type of work for that matter. How come Auto Zone is allowed to scan cars and give print outs? You know as well as I do the guy at Auto Zone does not have that Certification.

I am also a mechanic. And i take offense to someone calling me a thief.... Auto Zone is steeling your money by selling you parts you don't need. and you robbing yourself by taking the parts back, because it makes the parts more expensive.

Your problem could be very complex or something as easy as cleaning out a clogged dpfe tube. These problems tend to compound themselves when they are ignored. I simply suggested that you take it to someone who has dealt with the problem.

I personally have 35-40 thousand dollars in hand tools. This does not include the 7-12 thousand dollar scanner, or the 350.00 a month all data, that is used to aid in this diagnosis. Pay a good tech 30 dollars an hr, pay rent on a building, shop insurance that cost 10 thousand a year. And the 65.00 an hr is cheap. My rates are not that low...

You forum guys depend on people like myself and Nitrostangracing to help you through these things. But without people willing to give their hard earned experience, these forums are just a place for ignorance and miss-information.

I am not knocking anyone, i am here to help and be helped. But think before you start knocking repair shops.

A dpfe sensor is about 70.00, an egr valve is 75.00. You could replace both of those and still have the same problem.

The egr port in the intake could be clogged, the egr vale could be clogged, the diaphram in the egr could be bad, the egr tube could be clogged, the dpfe hoses could be collapsing on the inside, the dpfe tubes could be clogged the drivers side catalytic converter pre, or primary could be clogged, could be a loose vacuum hose, could be a collapsed vacuum hose, could be the egr control solenoid. etc. etc. etc.

You could spend 2 or 3 hundred dollars and still have to have a professional fix it. Thats why I suggested it...

I am all for DIY but some things are better left for the people who do it every day.

I am here to answer any questions i can...

Thanks, Tom

Take both dpfe lines loose, you should feel exhaust from both tubes, one has a restrictor at the main egr tube, so the folw won't be equal. You can use a coat hanger or heavy mechanics wire to clean carbon out till you feel flow from both tubes.

Nobody is calling you a theif killa...

Those prices are about 30 to $35 off from where I live...

Sure your Auto Mechanic knowlege is great and all but I believe that if we are working with the same Make/Model/Year whatever we can go by what each person has been threw instead of weeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllll it cooooulllld be this or that.

We've been there, we've done that. I don't think people I mean I KNOW people aren't signing up on this forum to be told to go to a mechanic. They KNOW they can go buy a diagnostic or blah blah blah. Sure certain issues will require a mechanic, I know that...

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Just to point it out. I didnt bring up or add my 2 cents about mechanics. I have a month old kid and my girl took 2 months off work and only half of it is paid. I was hoping I could get some help because I cant afford to take it somewhere. Sorry if other forum users offended you guys. I do auto upholstery and I swear everyone thinks they can do it. Lol. And i have over 5k in my upholstery tools. Plus I have alot of tools for everyday stuff. So I know how it is.
