Hello everyone; I am new here and I wanted to hear what you all may think could be causing the issue I have. I have a 2000 expedition 5.4L XLT and for about a week now the rear has been sagging and I have not heard the compressor not kick on to raise it back up no matter what I do. I first checked all the fuses that were listed in the owner's manual, all of which were good according to my tester. Then I took out the compressor, since everyone and their brother around here thought that it had gone bad, so that I could test it. I jumpered it directly to a battery and it fired up and sounded like it should. I then crawled underneath the near 6 inches of clearance I had underneath the vehicle so that I could check the ride height sensor to see if it was cracked. I looked at it some, I didn't see any damage to it and I removed the little cover to see the motherboard (that's what I would call it) and I didn't notice anything too interesting. I did notice that towards the top of the chip, some of the golden pieces had some black around them, but it was nothing substantial. I did notice that on the part that is a pump, I could pull it out so far and it would get stuck or I could bend it and it stay bent, is that anything hinting that it is bad? Following that, I done more research online and read about a second relay (other than the one in the passenger compartment) that is for the compressor. So I crawled underneath there and the part doesn't look like it is in any bad shape. I did notice that I just had to pull to remove the plugin that held the cords; it seemed like there used to be a clip that has been bent to the extent that it no longer secures the plugin. The terminals looked good, they were still shiny and I saw no corrosion on either ends. When I looked up the part, I saw that it was listed as the ABS/Compressor relay. For the past few months, the ABS light would be on every time I started the vehicle. So is it possible that the relay has been going bad for months now and has final given out? I talked to my mechanic and he said that his district manager would bring down the machine to check the ABS to see if the relay has gone bad this Tuesday.
Other than that, there are only a few small things I could tell you all. I can flip the relay switch inside the passenger compartment to off and it will say to check suspension and the light will go off when I flip it back to on. When I was fiddling with the ABS/Compressor relay, I would here a click from underneath the vehicle as I would wiggle the plugin, but it may have been something else. The union near the sensor in the rear still looked like it was in decent shape, I didn't notice any tears or anything. The hoses still look fine as well. My mechanic also jumpered the compressor at the shop with everything else connected, but the vehicle did not rise any that we could see. Would it take the vehicle a long time to air back up since the bags are flat, or would you see immediate results?
I appreciate any and all insight you all can offer me. I would like to stay away from our local Ford stealership if I can, out of all of the dealerships in this town, they are the most hated.
Thank you for your time!
