Hello everyone; I am new here and I wanted to hear what you all may think could be causing the issue I have. I have a 2000 expedition 5.4L XLT and for about a week now the rear has been sagging and I have not heard the compressor not kick on to raise it back up no matter what I do. I first checked all the fuses that were listed in the owner's manual, all of which were good according to my tester. Then I took out the compressor, since everyone and their brother around here thought that it had gone bad, so that I could test it. I jumpered it directly to a battery and it fired up and sounded like it should. I then crawled underneath the near 6 inches of clearance I had underneath the vehicle so that I could check the ride height sensor to see if it was cracked. I looked at it some, I didn't see any damage to it and I removed the little cover to see the motherboard (that's what I would call it) and I didn't notice anything too interesting. I did notice that towards the top of the chip, some of the golden pieces had some black around them, but it was nothing substantial. I did notice that on the part that is a pump, I could pull it out so far and it would get stuck or I could bend it and it stay bent, is that anything hinting that it is bad? Following that, I done more research online and read about a second relay (other than the one in the passenger compartment) that is for the compressor. So I crawled underneath there and the part doesn't look like it is in any bad shape. I did notice that I just had to pull to remove the plugin that held the cords; it seemed like there used to be a clip that has been bent to the extent that it no longer secures the plugin. The terminals looked good, they were still shiny and I saw no corrosion on either ends. When I looked up the part, I saw that it was listed as the ABS/Compressor relay. For the past few months, the ABS light would be on every time I started the vehicle. So is it possible that the relay has been going bad for months now and has final given out? I talked to my mechanic and he said that his district manager would bring down the machine to check the ABS to see if the relay has gone bad this Tuesday.

Other than that, there are only a few small things I could tell you all. I can flip the relay switch inside the passenger compartment to off and it will say to check suspension and the light will go off when I flip it back to on. When I was fiddling with the ABS/Compressor relay, I would here a click from underneath the vehicle as I would wiggle the plugin, but it may have been something else. The union near the sensor in the rear still looked like it was in decent shape, I didn't notice any tears or anything. The hoses still look fine as well. My mechanic also jumpered the compressor at the shop with everything else connected, but the vehicle did not rise any that we could see. Would it take the vehicle a long time to air back up since the bags are flat, or would you see immediate results?

I appreciate any and all insight you all can offer me. I would like to stay away from our local Ford stealership if I can, out of all of the dealerships in this town, they are the most hated.

Thank you for your time!

bad solenoid somewhere perhaps going to the bags?

I'm a first gen and replaced compressor back in Apr '11 after catastrophic failure, and did the rear bags too.

What would be the best way of checking the solenoids? I'm not sure, but I think there is one solenoid per bag correct? I am by far no expert in any of this.

In other news, I found another test I could do to try to rule something out. It was jumpering the relay that's connected to the air compressor and ABS. When I jumpered it, the compressor fired up so I think we may have found the prime suspect. So I'm going to order that part and hopefully it will fix it. I found it for $30 so I'm not going to be too sad if it doesn't work.

bad solenoids generally leak from the o-rings; soapy water sprayed generously on them will be the tell-tale sign (bubbles).

My mechanic got a diagnostic machine in me for day and checked everything out. Three error codes popped up:

C1725 Air suspension front pneumatic malfunction
C1760 Rear Height Sensor circuit malfunction
C1770 Air suspension vent solenoid output circuit malfunction

I have not the slightest clue on how to approach this, me and my mechanic are going to follow a workshop manual I found for troubleshooting each error. Does anyone know off the top of their head what we should look at?

Unless you are a die hard lover of the air suspension, I would just look into a conversion kit from Monroe. It just replaces the air bags with springs and shocks. Probably cheaper to repair and certainly more economical to maintain.

I replaced the relay that is behind the front bumper on the passenger side. I turned the vehicle on and the compressor immediately kicked on. While this is good, everything is still not fixed. The air bags do not seem to be filling up. I did let the compressor to run in cycles for about 30 minutes yesterday and 20 today, there is still no change. I did spray the bags and solenoids with soapy water to see if there were any leaks; there weren't any on either side. I did take the dryer off of the compressor to see if the compressor was still pumping air. The air coming from it was very noticeable so I do not believe the diaphragm on it was broke (which I was afraid of).

On another note, I did jack the rear end up a little bit to try to take off some of the weight so the bags could have a chance to fill up, but it did not help any. So far I have checked some of the lines and I haven't found a leak or tear in the line. However, I have only checked from the driver side door to the bag on that side. So any ideas?

there is an air-union coupler (under the master cylinder on mine) that is prone to failure/bursting, thus no air gets to the rear bags.

If you can deduce that that is your problem, you can hold the line together while the compressor is running, then have a second person turn the air suspension off and it will hold, not forever, but a while.

I think it was $22 or so back in the day: Ford # 2L1Z-5B322-AA

Everything is up and running now. Turns out the compressor was leaking where the hoses connect to the dryer. All that I needed to do is make sure the seal was good and the vehicle rose back up in less than a minute. I appreciate everyone's input!

So the only issue was the relay, the hoses weren't reconnected properly from taking the compressor off of the vehicle. So it was only a $29 fix. For anyone else that has this issue, be sure to check that relay. It's behind the front bumper on the passenger side and is a little bit below the headlight. You can test it by taking your battery out and taking two wires and taking it to the plugin. Positive will go the the pink/blue is on the plugin, negative will go to black. This will tell you if your compressor is bad or if the relay is bad. So I wish everyone else the luck I had with it being a simple fix!
