Some shops will take everything apart, then tell you you need calipers, pistons, pads, rotors, bearings and fluid flush. They run up a bill more than the car is worth. They won't put it back together without the new parts. They cite liability saying your car is dangerous to drive. You're forced to accept the repairs. Then you can't get it back without paying. So they file a mechanic's lien and take title to your car. THEN they put the original parts back in and sell your car. They have a good lawyer waiting in case you try to sue them.
That'd be a bad day if it were my car, for them. I'd walk into the shop and put it back together myself and then when they pulled their not being in the shop liability insurance bull I'd have them drag it out in the parking lot and I'd put it together myself in a floor jack. I'd take pictures of it every step of the way so I could 1:blast them on every social media and every complaint group there is and then 2: sue them.

I can assure you the cops would be there after they called them on me but once the cops got there I would be nice and calm and tell them no sir that wasn't a threat that was just an if-then statement..
I understand you guys need to make money but you're just going to have to go make your money today off of someone else. I'm not the one today so either put my car back together and take a fair diagnostic fee or I'll go put it back together myself and when you try to stop me I'll can't be held responsible for any injuries or damage sustained to you, your employees, or your building while I'm removing my car from its hostage situation being inside of your garage.
I have been into it almost this bad with a shop before and once you piss them off you definitely don't want to let them touch your car. This is probably why I haven't been to any shop in well over a decade.

Yes, that's why I try to do all of my own work on my cars even though I am a year away from turning 80
