Any one think about PlastiDipping Yer Hood?

Hmmm, I want to make my hood flat black, and I wonder if it might do well as a plastidipp job? I know on the rovers its a sticker... and I have used flat black for it too. Hmmm how shinny is plastidippwhen lights are blasting on it?
What do you guys think?

It would look awesome. Nice matte black. I was gonna do my hood on my jeep, but I just couldn't get a clean enough edge with the masking tape I was using, so I just did a big vinyl sticker instead. Looks pretty cool. Are you doing the whole hood, or just a section?

You can see in this photo of my bumper cap, it doesn't shine too bad. Just a nice matte finish.



And it is no more shiny than the vinyl on my hood. I'm gonna do the wheels hopefully this weekend or next.

I think I will try and just paint between the crests on the hood... but the clean line from the tape on the plastidipp may be an issue. But the good thing about plastidip... if it screws up... just spray the whole thing! I did my grill, and I dig it. Love how the stuff smooths out as it settles!!!

It's freaking incredible stuff. I think it will look badass with the silver on your truck. I was just having troubles with it sticking to the tape, and stretching as I pulled it off, but I guess I could have used a razor ever so lightly..... Or just use some pinstripping to make a real clean edge after it is done. I was gonna do that at first, but then just went witht the vinyl. Good luck with it, and please post pics after you are done!!!!

I will, have to wait till the damn snow is done... I think that pulling the tape at the right time has some to do with it too. Want to wait till its set enough not to run, but not enought to rubberize and streach when the tape is pulled.

In this video, the guy actually allows for some over spray beyond the part he is plasti-dipping. The natural seam created by the two parts allows the excess to be peeled away without the tape interfering. So taping off on your fender instead should provide that seam if you are doing the whole hood. If it's just a stripe or something, then I don't know.

Why not take the hood off and not mess with the tape?

I'm going to do the mouldings on my EB as soon as the temperature gets high enough. I think instead of taping it off, I'm going to remove the mouldings, spray them with several coats then reinstall them.

yes sir, make sure you get the temps up or a heat gun as the moldings will curl on you being cold, and they are a ******************** to get off cold. Heat gun does great witout damage. On Ebay, they sell the chrome strip inserts. I had a next door neighbor do that once and just pulled them off and the paint and clear went with the molding in a lightening strike design of paint missing.

The moldings were easy to 'dip' because they already are raised off the vehicle, so as you peel the tape away, the dip just slaps into place. It's when you try to make your own edge on a level body part that it gets a little tricky. I did all my moldings on the truck, and just masked the hell out of it. Even if you get some on the body, it just rubs right off.

That would make me wonder how long it will stay put on the areas you want covered.....???..... anyone with any longevity reports?

Well that is a well done video. My concern would be if it comes off that easily around the chrome trim. How is it on the chrome, if you bump into it, or bug matter gets on it or if you wash the vehicle, what keeps it from rolling or peeling off the trim pieces?

why not just paint the trim with regular paint? I dont understand the point of using plastidip, paint is easier to work with and cant be rubbed off, only upside of plastidip is its reversible if you dont like how it looks

Like I said, mine has been through the mountains, mudding, winter, slush, rain storms, etc. Still all there. The overspray rubs off because you don't do 4 coats of overspray. I wouldn't have done my Jeep if I didn't think it held up on my Expy. If you get a rock chip, or scratch that goes through all 4 coats, you can just spray a little over the area. It molds right in, and you can't tell there ever was a blemish.

Do or Do not. It's up to you. I swear by the stuff.

And it's 5 bucks a can, and requires no prep or skill. Takes about 5 minutes to dry. I actually want to Line-X it someday but till then, this stuff works perfectly.

Well, even if it takes some damage, it is easy to touch up. Idipped my grill last Sat, and I do highway driving every day. I will take some pics of it as time goes by and we will see how it holds up. I will post the first pic once it gets full daylight today.
