I would not even consider trying to remove exhaust manifold nuts or bolts without using an impact. I used to shear pretty much all exhaust fasteners using hand tools, I truly dreaded exhaust work on older vehicles as a result. With an impact wrench it seems like the rust bond breaks and the nuts/bolts usually back off. I just don't start out with full power, rather I ease into it increasing the strength of the impact slowly until it comes apart. I don't dread exhaust work anymore.
