We had some snow the other day and my wife used 4WD Hi (I have AWD, 4Hi, 4Lo) on my 2000 Ford Expy - 5.4L. She stopped, moved it back into AWD and took off again. After about 50 feet she heard a loud pop.
Ever since then, the truck seems to be stuck in 4WD. I took it to my local mechanic. The motor that controls the 4WD is working and has power. It's turning and engaging. He even pull the motor to check the plastic gear, all is good.
I had him change the diff fluids out while he was there and he said they were really really dirty.
He also lifted it and made sure the switch/motor was engaging/disengaging the 4WD.
Current state of the truck, when you turn rear sharp on dry pavement, rear and front tires seem to be jumping. Just like it is in 4WD.
Seems like the AWD is engaging when it shouldn't be...not sure what's wrong. Any ideas?
