I noticed the same engine/vehicle in Canada spec, recommends full synthetic. In US its Syn-blend. If you keep a vehicle past 100K, tow or drive under extreme conditions spend a few more bucks. If you trade it every 3 or 4 and just drive it normal use the the syn-blend.

I know RTFM, but i assume it's 5 quarts or a little over to compensate for the oil filter?

Also, anyone experience having to add oil before the next oil change?

I run 15K intervals and have to add maybe 2/3rds of a quart at 10K. It then runs the distance. I'm at 80K miles currently. I use Mobile 1 5W-30 on my 2012. Analysis has showed good results.

Isn't this exceeding the manufactures spec for duration?

Question was the best oil recommended. If you look at testing by project farm on youtube:
He tests a large number of oil brands. Amsoil is first with penzoil ultra platinum a close second. 3rd and 4th place went to penrite and schaeffers. If you are looking for a full synthetic mobil 1, that is their extended performance line. Regular mobil 1 “synthetic” is not really full synthetic oil. Their extended performance line is a good oil but not the best performing according to this test series. You get what you pay for and I run amsoil in my 2015 Navigator and 2011 super duty diesel.

One note for you during the process: I have yet to figure out how to get the filter off without dripping oil all over the subframe. This car is the most frustrating I have had in the last 10 in that regard. Also, make sure the engine is warm and the fill cap is off when you drain the oil, or it is very slow on this engine.

Have fun!

I used the method described in the YT video linked. Take an old quart bottle and put it under the oil filter. All the oil from the filter drips into the old quart bottle. Removal is a clean operation.

Thank you very much. Looks like me and the utility knife have a new project during the next oil change!

I just found it humorous that they put a drip pan with a funnel off the front of the frame, but the drips from the filter housing don't actually reach it...

I love oil threads.

For all you Motorcraft users....Kendall 1 motor oil is made by ConocoPhilips...the same company that makes Motorcraft oil. Kendall motor oil has a far better additive package than Motorcraft and its a lot cheaper.

Just sayin.

I’m going to do an oil change later today. However how do you reset the oil life indicator?

If you wish to humor yourself read the following post. https://www.expeditionforum.com/thr...cam-follower-issues.37958/page-10#post-350337

In a nutshell, Synthetic oils exceed manufacturer's recommended oil changes with a good bit of margin (some applications less than others). The oil condition can be readily assessed by analyzing a sample. For more than 35 years I've done oil analysis and had other inputs that have enabled me to comfortably settle on this interval.

Uhhhh....that’s your transmission pan. The oil pan is forward of that with either a big yellow plug sticking out the passenger side if it’s a plastic oil pan or a regular metal plug if metal. You need to take the felt covers off to get to the oil pan.

I followed a different online step by step video, and guess I got (obviously) confused hahaha

Edit: also do you (or anyone) know how to reset the oil life indicator?

Yeah new engines are short its easy to roll past the oil pan and arrive at the transmission pan.

DO NOT break the locking tabs off the the oil plug!!! Takes some futzing to get it right and not much force.

On my 2019 expedition, after the first ~2,000 miles changed the factory oil, using an engine flush, to Amsoil signature 5W-30 synthetic. (which is the recommended grade) with an Amsoil filter. It's a little messy draining oil as other have noted so you will have some wiping up to do on the little drain pan underneath the drain plug. This situation sounds ripe for replacing the drain plug with a shut-off valve and a little flex-hose extension installed to make this a much cleaner operation!

I recommend to get a Fumoto F107 if you have metal oil plug. All I had to do is remove 2 bolts near the oil drain, connect a small pvc tube to the fumoto, flip the valve and let oil drain for 20 minutes. Changing the oil filter is easy since it's in the front of the engine. Took me around 40 minutes for a clean oil change. I use Penzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 with Mobil 1 212A filter.
