Cats?

I have a bad rattle from the underside of my 2002 5.4L. It goes away when I rev the engine to about 100rpm over idle. Local mechanic said it is my cats and wants to replace all at about $1700. I asked about cutting them out and he said I would have a Check Engine Light all the time. I don't think he wants to rip me off as he just replaced the rear brakes, rear grease seals, heater core and did a t/u for $1100. I have 186k on her. Any suggestions?

I have the rears removed on mine without any problems....

Shop around some muffler shops, you should be able to get all 4 cats replaced for $600 or less. I just had the 2 on the pass side replaced for $300 about a week ago.
