chipped key?

I have a 97 expy... got a spare key made at wally world today and went to use it and it starts the truck but it will only run for a second... runs fine with my original key.... is it a chip key? I guess?.... is the dealershit the only place to get a spare?

I had this issue with my Impala SS when I bought replacement keys..My expo does not have a chipped key...but on my SS...I had to turn the ignition on and off 3 times with an original key to set the programming and then install the new coded key and turn it on and off once...bingo...here is a website that I buy from all the time and the guy is very nice and informative if the lock smith wont tell you....also Ace hardware cuts chipped keys...http://www.carandtruckremotes.com/

Yes it is a transponder key, and you can get the key off ebay.

yeah ford started it in 97 on the expys/f-150s. explorers got it 98-up.

on both my excursion and expedition i had my remote start guy install the bypass when doing my alarm/remote starts so i can use a normal key on either.

The programming procedure is in the owners manual. If I remember right you need 2 programmed keys to program another one.

This was all done to prevent valet people from making a copy of your key and then at a later date stopping by and stealing your rig. They had your address because you keep the registration in the glove box.

I think the later part of the 1998 production year run had PATS2 as well. Mine is a PATS1, but I learned that when I was putting in my remote start. It was tough finding a bypass for the 98 because of that.

well good thing mine is too tall for valet. i went to a hotel recently and told them do not TRY and park in the garage it wont fit with the lights. (before my ants) and what did they try and do? park it in there. i only know that cause i saw the guy heading towards the garage. i ran over there and told him no. but as a precaution i take all my paper work with me. my uncle taught me that so i do it now. they cant get my address unless they try hard that way.

being a valet I have a funny story about JUST that sorta thing... H2 hummer comes up to a hotel here in tampa and he either had a KC light bar or just lights mounted to the roof rack. The valet took it into the garage and it just barely fit under that PVC pipe at the entrance. So that means it'll fit right? Well if you drive up to another level that is where the height comes into play, once you get to the top (unless you are crawling) you are going to get some upward suspension stretch and thats just what happened when this guy was doing about 10-15mph and WHAM!!! that light rack was GONE!.
Cost the poor kid like $2000 to have it fixed for the guy (he had it fixed and the Stealership) Sometimes....
