I am wanting to get a tuner soon. I am leaning towards a custom tuner since I want to get one for better mileage on my long trips home, and another for higher elevations in the mountains when I really notice a big loss in power. Right now I have a drop in K&N and I cut the mufflers and am running duals out the back.
What programmer would you guys recommend?

Thanks,
Zerick

I use an sct tuner, custom tuned by Mike at 5 star tuning and I absolutely love it, he will work with you on what ever your needs are. I have the 87 economy, 87 performance and 93 perfomance custom tunes.

I've heard a lot of good things about SCT. What did yours cost you when it was all done?

I also have looked a lot at the new Edge programmers. I really like the look of the CS. Can both programmers be custom tuned the same?

yes the CS and CTS are basically the same programmer just the CTS is a bigger screen and touch screen...they also both can be custom tuned however I like the stock tunes available with my CS... but if you want to customized tunes check out that link I posted before... because to run custom tunes the edge needs to be programmed before hand... if you order one straight from them you can get custom tunes emailed to you and not have to send your edge in... but in my .02 the stock edge tunes are great I leave mine in level 2 for towing... but I did tones of research and haven't been disappointed in mine yet...

o and I only paid 350 with tax...lol got it from an edge rep at the bloomsburg pa 4wheel jamboree

I think I am leaning towards the CS, but we will see where my mind is in January. That's a pretty good price to. I am currently looking up some stuff for overhauling the motor since the miles are climbimg and possibly some new heads with some different cams. The custom tunes would be nice for that, but the canned tunes would help to see how much I want even more power. . .

if you are gonna do major mods like engine enternals I would look into custom tunes... if your gonna do simple stuff like header, CAI ect I would just save some cash and go with the "canned" stock edge cs... it will help out these expy a lot...

I have the SCT and I love it. I bought mine used and unlocked on ebay for $150 (vs $400 new). Then I had a custom tune made and emailed to me. I have the 93 power tune and a 93 economy tune. If I make some upgrades to the truck like exhaust or intake etc. then I can have a new custom tune made- or I can bring my truck to the local dyno and they can custom tune it directly on the dyno and get a few more HP out of it.

If you buy an over the counter tune file you won't get as much HP out of it. The place that wrote the tune file for me has supposedly a great reputation for Expedition tuning and the guy has a long list of files that he custom made on his own dyno. I just told him what mods I have and he sent me the best choice.

I know that with the SCT tuner I can modify my shift points, the idle speed in gear and also in neutral, I can change shift pressure in each gear, adjust the speedometer for tire sizes, ignition timing at various rpms, mixture at WOT, and a few other settings.

It's pretty cool that I can change the program to match what I'm trying to do. For instance if I want to tow something heavy I might raise the shift pressure a little bit and increase the timing at low RPM's. If highway cruising and saving some gas, I'd use the economy tune and pick up 1 or 2 mpg.

With the highest shift pressure it will sometimes bark second gear on dry roads, and spins going into second on wet roads. There's no real reason to have that much pressure but at least the ability to control it goes that far.

Thanks for all the great info, I'm most likely leaning towards the Edge CTS or the CS. I like the idea of the four tunes and the look with all the extra engine information.

I may end up modding the motor and if I do that I guess I'll just have to send it back in.

Keep the information coming. :)
