I've never had to replace one before, but when I changed all my bushings and ball joints, I talked to the guy at the store and its around $80 for the entire CV half shaft. Looks like you can get the boot for around 25. If you get a new shaft, its just 6 bolts on the axle, and the big nut on the spindle (250 ft lbs if I remember right).

I know but being 17 my parents dont like the idea of me doing it even though if I did I would borrow some air tools because thats the only way to do it!

Yeah, I just got my whole axle shaft replaced on the right side as well as my ball joints, control arms, and tie rods.

Probably better and more effective in the long run to just switch out the whole axle shaft.

I would try to get it fixed as soon as you can so you don't get dirt and debris in there and ruin the shaft, but to get the nut off the spindle, air tools work well, but I used a breaker bar with a pipe over the end. That route has rarely kept me from taking anything off.

well I have to wait until this tuesday-saturday to get it in the shop because I have to wait for the monroe conversion kit to arrive at my house. also its squeaking badly on the same side as the cv boot tear, is that the cv joint going bad already? I looked up the prices of parts too and its 25 for the boot 60 for the axle so either way its not going to be super expensive thank god

When it rains, it pours.... Is it squeaking only when you drive or all the time? When my ball joints were bad, it would squeak whenever I turned the wheel, or even if I jumped up and down on the truck. Ball joints take a bit more work and money. I used MOOG ball joints, which is what I would prefer as well (greasable and stronger than factory replacements).

I also believe its a ball joint, its most likely the upper drivers side ball joint, as its stock :0

Thats not a big deal though its old anyways, and the grease fitting would be great to have. so it looks like im in for a uca, 2 boots, and new coilovers/springs and an alignment all in one day, yay! lol $$$

Front-wheel-drive vehicles transfer the power from the transmission to the wheels through drive axle assemblies. These drive axles have constant-velocity (CV boot) joints at each end.
