Differences: front and rear coilovers

Hey everyone,

I have been very curious when looking at suspensions, what is the difference between the front and rear coilovers? Any help with this is appreciated.

Depends on the year, my 2016 EL Platinum no CCD or rear air bags has two different mounting types. Front has two bolts that run vertically through the LCA to mount them while rear has one bolt that runs horizontally through piece of metal attached to LCA. Other than that don’t remember there being a whole lot of difference

Thank you for the reply, I did forget to mention I have a 2011 Expy with no air bags.

I know your front coilovers have the old design that is just one horizontal bolt for attachment. They changed design in 2014 I believe

They're not interchangeable

Please correct me if I'm wrong, I think you mean the coil is over the shock and that this combo is referred to as a strut.

I believe you could also call it a coilover I guess but I think people usually reserve the term coilover for an adjustable unit with adjusters for height, rebound, damping.

As I’ve always understood it, ours would be considered a coilover (which is what @sixsix correctly referred to as “coil over the strut”). It’s a conventional double A-arm setup with a separate spring/shock. My 79 Mustang was a strut car where there’s a lower control arm and the strut to support the car.
A coilover is not an integral part of the suspension, i.e., if you remove it, the vehicle will be on the ground because it’s unsupported, but the rest of the suspension will keep it upright and the wheels will be attached just as if the shock and spring were on the vehicle.
Struts usually support the upright the wheel is attached to. If you remove the strut, the wheel flops around because it’s only connected at one point.

My 72 Monte Carlo uses a double A-arm suspension up front and a 4-link out back, and originally came with separate shocks and springs. I upgraded it to coilovers all around, but they aren’t adjustable in any way.

Put the spring on the strut as one complete assembly and you have a coilover.
