Does Anybody Here Worry About Rust? Or is that still just the Toyo guys?

I know of Toyotas having some frame issues in the past, but thought I heard of either Ford, Chevy, or both doing "something" to further prevent frame rust? Either way, thought I'd see what the hive had regarding this...

Me, no! I live in Arizona, and my Expedition is Aluminum. If I still lived in the snow belt, and being fastidious with my vehicle's appearance, maybe I'd obsess some...maybe even buy a beater car/truck for winter driving. On visits back to the midwest I just haven't seen the deterioration of older vehicles that I did in my youth.

I live in Western PA and have had my Expy undercoated with Corrosion Free and will plan to have it reapplied annually. https://corrosionfree.com/ I researched Fluid Film, Krown Oil, and was most comfortable with Corrosion Free since it doesn't degrade rubber or seal materials like Krown and Fluid Film. I also feel more comfortable having this done due to the fully boxed frame and the inability to clean salt out from the boxed frame.

To a degree but wouldnt say worry about it. I use a water based undercoating that is quite lightweight on all the vehicles I buy within the first few weeks and never have had any rust issues. Being you live in Tx if you arent close to the gulf you probably have nothing to worry about. I live in the north east where anytime it thinks of snowing they dump 150 pounds of salt per sq inch on the roads it seems...

Yup, I’m in NJ and rust is def something to be cognizant of given the use of road salt and the winter weather.

I undercoated my whole car at MilSpray. They provide a military coating for the whole underbody and behind body panels.

Not bad for about $1,200. Lifetime warranty as well.

I think the metal and prep and paint used by ford today, have enough durability to keep almost every vehicle mostly rust free.

If you run through a decent car wash every few weeks in the crap season, the vehicles are fine.

I don't change my oil every three thousand miles nor do I undercoat anymore.

I actually reside very close to Mother Ocean these days, and was concerned. I wanted to see if there was supposed to be some additional protection these days for Ford but can't recall it. I will look into some of these spray prodcuts, but heard spray on undercoating can trap moisture and actually hide the rust...

Same here... 26k miles in PA, and rust on the Expy suspension before I had it sprayed with Corrosion Free. This is also after spraying off under the vehicle after each salt event.

My 2020 Super Duty has never seen salt and the front and rear axles had rust from new, so I painted and had the Super Duty sprayed as well.

After crawling around and under my 2003 & 2014 Expy MANY times looking for and at corrosion .... I must say I'm left wondering why Ford doesn't put some kind of effective coating under there. I think it's because 99% of buyers never look there. It's also absurd that those big holes are there and uncovered on the "inner rocker panels". Just plain stupid.
Not using rust proof metal for brake lines is another WTF. They just didn't care to make a vehicle that will hold up long term. Thats for 2014 and before, don't know about newer ones.
My 2003 is hanging on for dear life in Salt City NY.

I hope Ford installs stainless break lines, otherwise (2003+ generation) those will rust and you will loose breaks while driving one day. Not easy to replace on fully assembled vehicle

Frame rust outs were pretty common with Toyota full frame vehicles, but I haven’t heard the same with Fords/Chevy’s. The body on the ‘18 and newer is aluminum, but it too can succumb to corrosion. Those in doubt go look at a 20 year old sliding screen door frame on any house, bottom channel is always corroded away. All that said, I live in Southern Cal and have absolutely zero concerns about corrosion. If I still lived in Nebraska, it would be another story.

Thinking about getting this done. How's it holding up after a year? Any issues?

In a perfect world, sure. However, far from reality. I recently looked at a 2018 Platinum with approx 50k miles. It was a Canadian vehicle. Rusted all underneath. I'd imagine no different then what you'd get if it was from the Rust Belt states.

I'm off this weekend to have my 2018 coated a 2nd time by Corrosion Free (had it done a year ago). They spray fancy vegetable oil on the chassis, inside the frame boxed frame rails, in the door cavities, etc. Seems to work pretty well from what I can tell since dust sticks to it and it creates a film coating that protects the metal under the vehicle. It also does not negatively affect rubber seals/gaskets like Fluid Film.

I'm 200 feet from the ocean. My last truck a 2019 Ram was showing rust at the welds at the rear of the bed. My 2014 KR was rusting at the rocker and suspension. Before leaving the driveway the windshield washers have to be used to be able to see out the windshield. It is a salt bath daily. My current KR goes through the car wash that does underneath 2 or 3 times a week. After living in New England most of my life I thought road salt was the worst going, I was wrong salt air is an ass kicker. There is no stopping it.

Live very close to Monterey Bay (200 yds.). Rust developed on Expedition front roof top above windshield. Easy repair, but I don't understand reason for rust in that location. Wife's Mustang had rust inside front rim of hood. My GM cars have been rust free over the years (not counting my glass/plastic Corvettes).
