My 07 has been doing this at random only at startup since I bought it two years ago. The last two times its been in for service, I've asked them to look at it. They say "couldnt' reproduce" but does it as soon as I go to leave or "oh, thats normal." My warranty is almost up and I am looking for thoughts. I keep thinking that it has something to do with the phasers but it sounds so much like a rod knock most time.

Ford says this is normal - YouTube

Are you using the correct weight oil? Sounds like something is bleeding down when off, stops when oil is present. You can't mistake a rod knock
- sends chills down your spine.

Its been getting Mobil1 Full Syn in whatever the recommended weight is. Ford dealer has recommended this filter and that filter... none make any difference. There's been times when I'll start it a minute after shutting it down and it'll do it. The most odd part is that it acts like its got a electronic oil pump. If I just stick the key in and start it cold, it'll knock the majority of the time. If I let it sit with the key on for a few seconds before starting it, its less common.

That sounds like phasers. Which is not normal.

Thanks for backing up my suspicion. Guess I have yet another warranty claim to make. Fortunately for me... my complaint should be on the last two service files... here's to hoping they don't try to bend me over for another deductible.

FWIW I've run 5w-20 and 5w-30 and noticed no difference between them. I run a Motorcraft filter as well. Make sure they check the VCT solenoids as well. The screens can get clogged and cause issues.

I tried 20 and 30 as well and noticed no difference either. Is it normal for the phaser noise to be as random as it is in my case? I can let the damn thing sit for a week and it won't rattle. Drive it and park it for 15 minutes and then start it again and it rattles.

Yeah. That's how it started in our 06 GT. It would come and go. Eventually it was always there and we had to swap them out.

Mine does the same thing. Changed the oil filter (different brands) and that didn't fix it. I've read things on the cam phasers and the vct solenoids, even read stuff on chain tensioners causing this noise. I just would like know what is exactly causing this so I can fix once. Man I just hate throwing money at it changing parts and praying that that's going fix it.

Usually it's the phasers that cause the noise. IMO, you should replace all the parts at once. We ordered the kit from Ford that includes guides and tensioners. When we pulled the timing cover off we found one of the guides had broken. So I was glad I ordered the kit.

Once you fix it PLEASE STOP USING MOBIL 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The crap they sell at the store is NOT the same as the racing oil. Lots of Chevy LS engines have catastrophic failures with it. Look on Bob the Oil Guy forums. WalMart Motorcraft oil is inexpensive and OEM.

Thanks for the advice but I don't run Mobil1 because of its of its exposure in the racing world. I'm also familiar with Bob the oil guy. I've run Amsoil, Royal Purple, and a handful of other oils. I run Mobil1 because it is the best oil I've used over the course of the last 7 years. My 227k mile A4 has run its last 120k on Mobil1. My last Super Duty ran amazing on Mobil1. If I wanted a crap LS motor, I'd have bought a Chevy.

I've also run Mobil 1 in my fleet with no issues (and had the oil tested). Going on 150k in the Expy and due for another test.

Tough to change brands based on hearsay when independent tests don't back making a change.

Chiming in here on the cam phasers...I have a '10 EL and noticed it. Did a little research and took it to the dealership. They claimed Ford issued a bulletin claiming it is a known issue and do NOT attempt to repair it....it does NOT affect the drive-ability of the vehicle. I was given a generic print out so I contacted FMC. The replies I received stated they were not aware..
"I understand that you would like to confirm that your current vehicle concern is a known issue.
I have verified from our resources that we do not have any Recalls indicating that your concern is a known issue. I have also checked that there are no factory warranties, recalls or programs in effect on your vehicle that would provide assistance for your current concern. I suggest that you keep your repair receipts in case Ford initiates a recall or Customer Satisfaction Program in the future".
Anyone has anything on the positive side?
