If you're getting nothing, not even crank, I would suspect the ignition wiring system.
Could be the ignition switch or there abouts.
I would also check the battery voltage. Is it 12 volts?
Can you turn the ignition to accessory or run? Does the radio work in either? ,do o the cluster bulbs prove they work in run?
Do you have a cheap obd2 reader? If so you could pull a trouble code if there are any.
It could any any the following
- neutral safety switch.
- ignition switch.
- transmission range sensor (gear shift).
- associated wiring with any of the above.
- starter relay.
I would ignore the following for now, but not entirely. By the sound of your issue it's the above list not the following. However, the below could.
-PATS - coded ignition key. This is only checked on startup. It will not cause ignition failure during operation. Also, Older Ford products will crank and not start, while new Fords after ~2007 won't crank. All Fords will read the key on start-up only, It will produce a solid cluster light reading SECURITY or padlock icon on programmed key (good read). It will flash about 7 times a second if it's a bad read or non programmed key.
Since it died while driving, I'm guessing it didn't sputter or the like. Did it feel like it would if you turn off the ignition then coasted?
It would help to have a code reader, but even a circuit test light helps. Clip it to the battery negative terminal. This will tell you if you have a 12v source at the ignition, then each subordinate wire as you click though each stage of the switch.
Here are some links to check.
Nuetral safety.

Column gear shift.
Try starting in neutral instead of park. Try also reverse or drive. Have a parter wiggle the shifter as you crank.
This is pulled from a taurus forum. But is generalized to match all vehicles. It's a good read though about no-start issues

The nice thing about Ford products is that the wiring diagrams are cheap. They're un $20 from eBay.
