Well, had a chance to do some checking with chassis ear.

Front and rear differentials sound fine. Typical gear / bearing whine you might expect.

Same for the tranny, bell housing area.

Exhaust is obnoxiously loud of course. Sounds like the mic is inside the exhaust when tested. May do further testing to make sure its not resonating at any point.

The transfer case does not sound so good. Sounds like marbles tumbling in a can and of course increases as speed does. Surprisingly it goes away when you stop. :hmm: Not sure exactly what it is supposed to sound like because I am sure the chain will make some noise when she is spinning. How much is the concern. It sounds the worse at the tail shaft and front driveshaft area. There is significant slop at the rear tail shaft so it may be time for a rebuild. May pull the front driveshaft as well to check the U joints. If one is siezed I would not know unless I pull it.

Anybody with a first gen 4wd want to get under their expy and try and wiggle their rear driveshaft at the tailshaft of the transfer case??

Mine seems to have significant slop but the U-joints are tight. Its the output shaft that has all the play.

I could prolly do that, 'cept I have a slight shudder/wobble at 7-10 mph consistently, still don't know what it is.
