Hello all, this is my first post.
I have a 1998, 4.6L Expedition with 139k miles.
So my question is regarding the switch that changes the 4x4 modes. I usually drive in 2H, and can switch into A4WD just fine. However, when I place the vehicle into 4x4, or 4H, the switch is really finnicky. Like if a hair touches it, the light on the dash will click over to read A4WD, then back to 4x4. The truck will successfully be in 4x4 as the front tires feel glued to the road. However, I am curious of when this happens, if it might be bad for anything like the transfer case. Sometimes it'll click back and forth four times in a row. I hear no other audible sounds other than the clicking of the light indicator.
I've heard that the truck won't actually switch unless you are at a complete stop, but sometimes this rapid clicking back and forth does happen at a stop. For 4x4, I usally turn it all the way over to 4L in order to avoid the rapid switching, but then I worry if I change gears past neutral, I'll throw it into the low range.
So if anyone can suggest a fix for this, I'd appreciate it. But I really want an idea of the damage that it may be causing.
Thanks for your time and help.
