I seem to be having a lot of odd trouble with my two newer vehicles, including a 2017 Expedition Limited. My previous thread on my transmission failure at 13,000 miles described the circumstances and the fix the dealer did of "replacing the valve body" at N/C to me was completely unexpected as I was led to believe this transmission was pretty much bullet proof when I bought the truck, produced in February of 2017. I went back and did some more research today and what appears to be what was wrong with my truck was the subject of Ford TSB SSM 46451 which was issued in March of 2017 covering any vehicle (including Expeditions) from 2009-2017 for "valve body rebuild procedure").
As there are a bunch of threads on this site for various transmission maladies, it would be nice if someone with access to this TSM would post a copy of this for the help of some of those folks, as perhaps they could get some help from the dealerships they might otherwise not get. My dealer service department pretty much refused to give me any information on the problem-we drive a lot of dark, back country roads and having a transmission go away again is not something we want.
Just to show my car troubles are not with Ford alone, I have a 2011 Corvette GS with 6K miles on it, bought new. A month ago the Chevy dealership took 2 weeks to fix "Fob Not Recognized" problem. Then last week I got tired of a "rattling" noise at idle, thinking it was a loose exhaust connection (pipe hitting on something) took it back in. After they inspected it they advised my the Torque Tube bearings were gone and needed to be replace at $2800 for parts and labor! Remember the transmission on these is back with the differential, same as with the C7's. Turns out that this is a common problem with C5, C6, &C7 Corvettes as is the "Fob not recognized" issue on C6 and C7 Corvettes.
IMO is beginning to appear that American car manufacturers are just not cutting it like they used to...

The American manufacturers have been having problems since the mid seventies. Theirs a few sweet spots in-between, but it seems like it never stops. The Japanese and German manufacturers are not without their problems, but it would seem that a country that can go to the Moon and back 50 years ago, could start building cars and trucks right. God knows we pay enough for them.

My 6R75 has always had a funky shift here and there, mostly at low speed operation with no load. I don’t think it’s long for this world. Who knows.

Generally they are good transmissions, which commonly go for well over 200K miles. There are problem ones here and there but it is a robust design. Now there are some GM's that almost never break 90K miles... And look at all the *** cars that have automatics known for failing well before 100K miles.

I’ve had a whirring sound slowing down for a bit. Shop is going after it Tuesday to fix. For all I know it might be a new transmission this week to solve the issue.

Let's hope not. That's gotta be over $3,000.00 for a decent 6speed.

I'd recommend going to a 6R80, and be done with it.

170k on my 6R75 and still going strong. Hope it continues.

I’d rather put a new 6R75 in this truck than buy a different truck with a 6R80 if the trans were bad. My noises are more likely wheel bearing and front end parts though. I’m hoping!

Didn’t mean to monkey up this thread guys, sorry.

Wouldn't be a normal thread if we didn't get off topic, or someone blew his top. A lot of A personalities here. When you put a bunch of roosters in a barn, feathers get ruffled.

What were the symptoms? Never mind I'm already paranoid enough about this Expy. Thank goodness I bought the Ford extended warranty.

I think part of the issue is the recommended maintenance intervals. Too long between fluid changes.

There was 6R60 in Explorers from 06-08. The 6R75 was used in 07 & 08 Expeditions. Then 6R80 in all these platforms beyond 2008. If you go to Ford site and look for their rebuilt transmissions they group the 6R75 & 6R80 as the same transmission. Then 6R60 is on its own.

I remember reading the 6R75 and 80 transmissions were largely the same besides one shaft and the valve body.

Well the main point on starting this post was the manufacturers generally not advising owners of their vehicles of TSB details that would allow them to take preventative action to deal with possible safety or other faults before the Feds order them to, which can be a slow, prolonged process. Of course the manufacturers do not want the customers to know of the repairs they may/may not need to do due to potential cost issues for themselves generally before the Feds order them to or at least threaten. It would be nice to think there is a compromise in all this where at least all owners were advised that TSBs were issued and basically what they were for, offering perhaps a discounted oil change or something to get them into the shop. Does anyone know the details of this TSB on the 3rd Gen Expedition?

Ford announced 1.5 Million vehicle this am including 2011-2013 F150's and various other vehicles up through 2019 ones for "sudden downshifts to 1st Gear" causing accidents and injuries including "whiplash" Given how violent the transmission acted in my 2017 Expedition Limited I sense that our transmission failure may have been a related issue. Gen 3 Expedition owners need to be aware of what is going on with this one.
