My 2008 Expy LTD just passed its 3yr/36000 mile warranty. Bought it new in 08 but I didn't purchase the extended warranty then. What's your take on this guys? Should I buy it? I had a whining noise problem coming from under the hood and it turned out to be the idler pulley. My local Ford service was nice enough to just have me pay a $50 deductible for the part and labor since I'm not that far over the 3/36.

Guess it depends on the price and how long you plan to own it. Extended warranty value is solely based on your comfort level with the potential of an expensive repair. I run my vehicles into the ground and I always buy the extended warranty on American vehicles (at time of purchase as you can deal on it then)....This has paid off for me as every American vehicle I have owned has had serious mechanical issues that fell under the extended warranty. I did not get one for my Honda Accord and it's gone well past 100,000 miles with only a spark plug change.

Hope that helps.

If you don't have to pay a deductible or have a very low deductible then it might be worth it, but a lot of extended warranty’s that are bought when the car's not new have large deductibles which make it not worth it at all. I have 130,000 miles on my expedition, and I would not have benefited if I got a warranty because I've just done routine maintenance and only a couple cheap repairs.

Thanks for the input guys. I just never bought any extended warranty on any of the vehicles I've owned. I also have a 98 Eddie Bauer Expy and a 97 Thunderbird and both vehicles are still running strong. Never had any major problems with both of them.

Sure wish I had the same luck, I had the engine replaced on my Tahoe at 60,000 miles due to it burning a quart every 700 miles, and a tranny blew on a Ford Ranger at 70,000, both covered under the extended warranty. Luck of the draw I suppose.

Good luck!

Good thing you bought the warranty. That would've been a really big expense. I guess we'll just never know.
